Home Theatre Systems Home Theatre Sytems- Televisions, dvd players and speakers combined. Surround sound- It is important to have a surround sound receiver that will distribute the sound to an appropriate speaker Wide screen tvs and lately 3-D televisions Clarity of picture-This is achieved through plasma, led and lcd tvs A high definition source-High definition sources include blu-ray disks
Satellite Television Programmes are transmitted via communication satellites. Uplink satellite dish receives programme signals. It points to a satellite with a transponder. The transponder then sends the signal back to the earth to a receiving satellite usually in a household Transponder: It transmits and responds to satellite signals At the receiving satellite the signal is deflected by the shape of the dish in order to increase its strength. The signal is decoded into a picture that can be watched on tv. Refer to page 110
Satellite Television cntd The receiver box also acts as a decoder. The viewing card has the programme required to carry out the decoding. The provider pays programme producers for the right to broadcast them. The signal is transmitted as compressed radio signals. The compression is called encoding. Some program providers receive the signals then use cables for onward transmission.
Terrestrial Television This I in most cases referred to as braodcast television. A poerful antennae is used for broadcasting. The signal is split into separate sound and video signals. The data is gathered by transmitters for onward transmission. It combines the two signals into one signal. TV aerials must point in the direction of the transmitter. Televisions have inbuilt receivers to convert the signal into picture and audio. If there are obstacles the signals will not reach the destination. Refer to page 111
Internet Television Internet television has grown in use bacause of the following factors: The number of people online Increased internet connection speed Decrease in connection costs Increased bandwidth NB The quality and number of programmes is constantly increasing. Note the development of HDTV. Blu-ray and DVD-RAM disks have also led to an improvement in picture quality.
Music centres They have the following features: Frequency modulation (FM) -SW and LW and DAB Cassette deck CD player Amplifier Speakers USB port Memory stick Secure digital memory card MP3/WMA media formats
Portable or personal stereo systems Some digital radios can only receive signals served by a DAB transmitter Some come with an electronic programme guide There are two types of portable media players -Hard disk based systems -Solid state based systems Additional features include clocks and alarms Docking stations allow the user to recharge the player
Interactive games console They require powerful processors and graphics engines. Some of them are internet enabled so allow people to play on the internet.
Video-on-demand systems This allows viewers to watch a video over a network. It can be received by computers, mobile phones and portable media players. Most VOD service providers do not allow downloads. This is starting to change. Think of examples of VOD service providers.
Projectors Can be connected to satellite receivers, dvd players as well as computers. Projector control software is used by the systems.
