2 Lab Safety - Or - When Bad Things Happen to Good People Today’s Target: I will be able to understand the rules of the class and why they are important. Supply Check Class Rules Hand out safety contract Highlight key safety guidelines. –Note: You are responsible to read and follow ALL safety guidelines, regardless of whether it is specifically discussed.

4 Lab Safety - Or - When Bad Things Happen to Good People Highlight the following: –Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment. Fire Extinguisher Fire Blanket Eye Wash Station – Demonstration (tomorrow) Chemical Shower – Demonstration (tomorrow) –Tie back or remove dangling items such as jewelry, sleeves, bags, long hair. –Don’t eat, drink, chew gum or taste any laboratory materials, even ice. Do not apply cosmetics in the lab area.

8 Binder Set-up and Organization. The binder will be your key reference guide for this course. It must be kept in an orderly fashion and used at all times. Binders will be periodically checked and graded by: –Binder checks –Binder tests/quizzes

9 Notebook Set-up and Organization. What goes in each section? Lab Section/Activities Composition Notebook Data Tables/Handouts related to the activity we are doing.

11 Lab Safety - Or - When Bad Things Happen to Good People Highlight the following: –Pictures - Wear safety goggles and aprons appropriately any time chemicals, heat, or glassware is being used. Rinse off safety clothing with water if chemicals are spilled on them. –If you or your partner are hurt, immediately yell out “CODE 1, CODE 1!” to get the teacher’s attention. –Dispose of all experimental waste properly by following directions from your teacher. Everything does not belong in the trashcan! –NOT ON CONTRACT - Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals. Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving class.

20 Lab Safety - Or - When Bad Things Happen to Good People – NOT ON CONTRACT - If a chemical should splash in your eye(s), on your skin, or on your clothing immediately flush the area with running water from the eye wash station/safety shower for at least 20 minutes. Notify the teacher.

21 Safety Project –(quiz grade) due Friday Choose one of the following formats to complete this project: –Poem (minimum of 15 lines) –Essay (minimum of 2 paragraphs) –Mini Poster (8 x 10 piece of computer paper) –Story (minimum of 2 paragraphs) –PowerPoint or DVD of a safety situation. Be sure to include the following information in your project regardless of the format you choose: –The safety statement (copied from your safety contract) –An appropriate scenario or situation when the safety precaution applies. –What to do in order to follow the safety precaution. –What might happen if the safety precaution is not followed.

22 Exit Ticket Take out a 3x5 card and put your name, today’s date, and this period in the upper right hand corner. Answer the following question on your card: –Which safety rule are you going to base your project on, and what form will the project take? DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD!!!
