Vocabulary Despot: a ruler or other person who holds absolute power, typically one who exercises it in a cruel or oppressive way Despotism: the exercise of absolute power, especially in a cruel and oppressive way Tyrant: a cruel and oppressive ruler Tyranny: cruel and oppressive government or rule. Monarch: a sovereign head of state, especially a king, queen, or emperor.
