States of Matter also known as Phases of Matter physical forms in which a substance can exist
STATES OF MATTER SOLIDLIQUIDGAS Definite shape** Definite volume** Atoms are close together, particles are moving but not fast enough to overcome the attraction between the molecules; particles are vibrating in place No definite shape-takes shape of container** Definite volume** Particles are moving fast enough to overcome some of the attraction between them. The particles slide past each other No definite shape-takes shape of container No definite volume-fills volume of container Particles are moving quickly so they can break away completely from one another. The amount of empty space between gas particles can change ENERGY IS ADDED ENERGY IS REMOVED
KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY (KMT): How the particles move in all states of matter Also how they move during a phase change
PHASE CHANGES: (change of one state of matter to another) Goes from:Particles:Energy is: 1. Freezing: Liquid to solidSlow down and move closer together Removed 2. Melting:Solid to liquid Speed up and move farther away Added 3. Evaporation:Liquid to gas Speed up and move farther away Added 4. Condensation:Gas to liquid Slow down and move closer together Removed 5. Sublimation:Solid to gasSpeed up and move farther away Added
PHASES OF MATTER POSTER Use textbook Chapter 3 (pages and 74-78) to help you The points you need to include are: The three states or matter and how particle movement explains each state A picture example of each that is NOT ICE, WATER, or WATER VAPOR The phase changes along with (1) what states they occur between, (2) what happens to the particles and (3) whether the particle motion is due to energy added or taken away. Key words to include: Solid, liquid, gas, freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation, sublimation Your poster should be neat, easy to read, colorful and understandable. It should also be a poster, meaning that it SHOULD NOT be a piece of paper with only writing on it.
