AGENDA 2-2-15  Do Now  HW Check  5 min self review  Quiz  Balancing Chemical Reactions  Kahoot!

QUIZ - 5 min self review - 8 minutes - if you finish fold length wise (hotdog) and write your name on the outside - NO voices - PENCIL ONLY - NOTHING ELSE OUT

TODAY IS FEBRUARY 3, 2015 Topic: Chemical Reactions Lesson Objectives: SWBAT  2.2.2 Analyze evidence of chemical change 2.2.3 Analyze the law of conservation of matter and how it applies to various types of chemical equations Essential Question: 2.2 Analyze chemical reactions in terms of quantities, product formation, and energy.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS (P.17) This is the language to describe a Chemical Reaction! 1

CHEMICAL REACTIONS (P.17)  Coefficients are used for balancing reactions. 1 The subscripts DO NOT CHANGE when balancing reactions

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  The law of conservation of mass says that we can not create mass nor destroy mass.  Atoms have mass.  We can not create atoms, nor destroy atoms  Remember: Every atom that goes into a reaction must come out!!!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17) Steps:  1. Write element list underneath arrow.  2. Take atom inventory on each side of arrow  3. Use multipliers (coefficients) to balance elements.  Balance H second to last and O last. If you struggle to balance and are left with ONLY O, double all your coefficients.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17) _____ H 2 + ____ O 2  ____ H 2 O  2 H 2 O 1 UUnderneath the arrow, make your atom list. OOn each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ____ H 2 + ____ O 2  ____ H 2 O  2 H 2  2 O 1 x2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ____ H 2 + ____ O 2  _2__ H 2 O  2 H 2  2 O 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ____ H 2 + ____ O 2  _2__ H 2 O  2 H 2 x2 = 4  2 O 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ____ H 2 + ____ O 2  _2__ H 2 O  2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4  2 O 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  __2_ H 2 + ____ O 2  _2__ H 2 O  4=2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4  2 O 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17) __2_ H 2 + __1_ O 2  _2__ H 2 O 4=2x 2 H 2 x2 = 4 2=1x 2 O 1 x2 = 2 Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. On each side, keep track of atoms on that side. Multipliers become coefficients!

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ___ H 2 + ____ N 2  ___ H 3 N  2 H 3  2 N 1  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  ___ H 2 + ____ N 2  _2__ H 3 N  2 H 3 x2 = 6  2 N 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17)  __3_ H 2 + ____ N 2  _2__ H 3 N  6 = 3x 2 H 3 x2 = 6  2 N 1 x2 = 2  Underneath the arrow, make your atom list.  On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P17) __3_ H 2 + __1_ N 2  _2__ H 3 N 6 = 3x 2 H 3 x2 = 6 2 = 1x 2 N 1 x2 = 2 Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS On a white board with a partner, balance: ____ S 8 + ____ O 2  ____ SO 2 ___ AlBr 3 + ___ Cl 2  ___ AlCl 3 + ___ Br 2 __Ca(OH) 2 +__NaNO 3  __Ca(NO 3 ) 2 +__NaOH

EXIT TICKET 9-8 Balance the following Chemical Reaction ___ Na + ___ O 2  ___ Na 2 O

HW HEADSTART

TUESDAY

BALANCING REACTIONS  On a white board with a partner, balance:  ____ CaCl 2 + ____ NaOH  ____ Ca(OH) 2 + ____ NaCl   ____ CaCO 3  ____ CaO + ____ CO 2  ___ Na + ___ O 2  ___ Na 2 O

BALANCING REACTIONS (P12) ____ H 2 + ____ O 2  ____ H 2 O Two oxygens on the left mean I need to add one more water molecule to the right. Now we need 2 more H’s on left. H H H H H O H O H H H H H O H H H H H O H H H H

BALANCING REACTIONS (P12) ____ H 2 + ____ P  ____ H 3 P 3 H’s on right and 2 H’s on left mean we need have 6 H’s total (least common multiple). Add P H H H H H P H H H H H P H H H H H H H H H P H H H H H H H P H H

____ H 2 + ____ N 2  ____ H 3 N 3 H’s on right and 2 H’s on left mean we need have 6 H’s total (least common multiple). H H H H H N H H H H H N H H H H H H H H H N H H H H H H H N H H

_____ H 2 + ____ P  ____ H 3 P  2 H 3  1 P 1 UUnderneath the arrow, make your atom list. OOn each side, keep track of atoms on that side.

BALANCING REACTIONS (P12) __3_ H 2 + _2__ P  __2_ H 3 P 6=3x 2 H 3 x2 =6 2=2x 1 P 1 x2 =2 Underneath the arrow, make your atom list. On each side, keep track of atoms on that side.
