Did not want to listen to the Treaty of Versailles. When he had all the power, he stopped the Treaty, step by step. He built an army, larger than was allowed. Conscription was introduced Built warships and submarines.
Hitler’s army enters the Rhineland. This was forbidden by the Treaty: border with France must be military-free. League of Nations: did nothing. Britain and France followed policy of appeasement. They made concessions to avoid war.
Hitler signs a pact with Italy: Rome-Berlin Axis From then: Italy and Germany were allies. Mussolini and Hitler need each other.
Hitler was an Austrian. He wanted all German-speaking countries together in 1 empire. So Austria should be added to Germany. (= Anschluss) Chancellor Dollfuss was assassinated by Austrian Nazis in 1934, in a failed coup. Hitler called Austrian Nazi’s “amateurs”. Many were arrested.
9 th of March: Government was against, but started a referendum: should Austria be united with Germany? Government hoped that people would vote against. Before the referendum: On 12 th of March Hitler invaded Austria.
It took Hitler 3 days to take over Austria. Then his army organised the referendum. Officially: 99% voted in favour: impossible. (many people had no right to vote, like Jews and communists) But still: a large group was indeed in favour.
Not satisfied yet, Austria was not enough. He also wanted to have the Sudetenland. This is a part of Czechoslovakia
Hitler wants it back, even if it would mean War! Britain wanted peace, no matter what. Chamberlain talked to Hitler several times, to make him change his mind.
September 1938: Britain, France, Italy and Germany talked in Munich about this problem. Czechoslovakia was not invited! In the end, they signed an agreement: Hitler could have Sudetenland, and in return guaranteed peace. Chamberlain, Daladier, Hitler and Mussolini
Appeasement: making concessions tot keep the peace. The end
