Proposed Activities of CEIME  Executive Development Program  Continuing Education Program Workshops, or Short term courses – priority-1 SUBJECT: TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN DEEP MINING Mining today is a capital intensive, high technology and Productive equipment industry.

Objective of the short term course Readily available and abundant mineral resources have provided both fuel and raw materials for the country’s economic growth. Unfortunately, it is now becoming increasingly apparent that there are serious challenges in front of the mineral sector today 7/20/2012 16/26

QUERIES BEFORE US Is the current technology adequate to meet the country’s demand for minerals What is the focus of R&D. Are the results of R&D being utilized by the industry ? If No where are we going wrong? How will the Ministry of Mines, academia and the industry come together to develop mining technology in the country What new technology is required to (1). Increase the recovery from mineral deposits (2). Mine low grade and deep seated deposits. 7/20/2012 17/26

Research areas to focus – deep underground mines Large diameter blasting Back filling methods to enhance ore recovery and for the proper disposal of waste rock and tailings ( with a focus on paste back filling technology) Stability of large underground openings In situ leaching- not a new concept but still has to find its place in Indian hardrock mining. Prediction and assessment of fluid flow characteristics in fractured rock masses 7/20/2012 18/26

Open pit mining Materials handling growing necessity of moving large tonnages of ore to long distances, in view of increasing depth of the open pit mines. Environmentally acceptable mining there is a strong need for research that will lead to the practical development of mining methods having a minimum disturbance to the surface

Longterm Sustainability  Establish strong working relationship with core mining companies, PSUs and Private  Identify a few core companies as industry partners of CEIME  Work on the principle “Mines to Mill” providing total mining solutions  Setup infrastructures and laboratory facilities  Engage in fundamental research for developing innovative and unique solutions, e.g. numerical modelling, support design, mine instrumentations, etc.  Above all, bring out a “Brand Name” of CEIME that “it delivers” Research and Development  Establish M.S. or equivalent degree course(s) for Industry personnel  Provide “certificate of competency” in various fields of mining technology  Establish a conference theme for years to come, e.g. “Conference on Ground Control” conducted at WVU, USA  Establish M.S. or equivalent degree course(s) for Industry personnel  Provide “certificate of competency” in various fields of mining technology  Establish a conference theme for years to come, e.g. “Conference on Ground Control” conducted at WVU, USA Academics

Long term research Research and Development  Fundamental Research  State funded research on cutting edge and innovative technologies for deep seated deposits  Research on rock dynamic fracture mechanics  Filling technologies including reclamation and rehabilitation  Sponsored and Consultancy Research  Industry sponsored research for solving specific problems  Collaborative research for industries in both countries  Acclimatization of advanced technology from Canada
