3. The Mystery of Lawlessness Rom 1-7; Rom 11:25; Jer 17:9; Jas 1:14-15 The sin of rebellion – Jas 1:14-15 The sin of rebellion – Jas 1:14-15 Disregarding divine warning Disregarding divine warning Disobeying God’s command Disobeying God’s command Who Hardens the Heart? Who Hardens the Heart? God? Sinner? Both? God? Sinner? Both? - Jeremiah 17:9; James 1: Jeremiah 17:9; James 1: Failure to exercise self-control Failure to exercise self-control Evil crouches at the door Evil crouches at the door You must master it You must master it Moral failure Moral failure Ensnared by the flesh, the world and the devil Ensnared by the flesh, the world and the devil Slavery to sin Slavery to sin Serving evil Serving evil Hardened hearts, seared conscience Hardened hearts, seared conscience Idolatry, lawlessness, wickedness Idolatry, lawlessness, wickedness FALL How does God respond to a hardened ? A man is a slave to whatever has mastered him 2 Pet 2:19 Am I my brother’s keeper?

Have Conscience Will Travel Q: Why must I be accountable for my ancestors’ sin? (Adam & Eve) Q: Why must I be accountable for my ancestors’ sin? (Adam & Eve) A. Consider slavery. When persons by their own debt or sin sell themselves into slavery, there are only 2 options for the children: Either they are set free by the slaveholder or they are redeemed by someone else who is willing to pay the price. A. Consider slavery. When persons by their own debt or sin sell themselves into slavery, there are only 2 options for the children: Either they are set free by the slaveholder or they are redeemed by someone else who is willing to pay the price. Adam & Eve sold themselves into slavery to sin, the slavemaster Satan is not willing to let them go. But G-D sent His own son (His own Arm) to redeem His own creation by paying the price.

Each and All are Accountable But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of G-D's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. G-D "will give to each person according to what he has done” Rom 2:5-6; Ps 62:12; Prov 24:12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in G-D's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. Rom 2:12-13 God’s wrath gives sinners over to the desires of their  Rom 1: Exercise of conscience is proof law is written on the  Rom 2:14-16 My final destiny d dd depends on the state of my 

“Thy Will Be Done” Submissive Alignment or Rebellious Autonomy? Only 2 kinds of people Those who say to God: “Thy will be done” God enables them to overcome temptation Those to whom God says: “Thy will be done” God releases them into their own cycle of self-deception & self-destruction Only the Master of All can set a slave free from his taskmasters From Lies with Truth Out of Darkness into the Light Turning Evil into Good Conquering Death with Life A man cannot serve 2 masters The question is who do we trust more to help: God or your self? With 100% dependence on God Anyone can be set free from the most powerful temptation 1 Cor 10:13; 2 Pet 2:9-11 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace Rom 6:14 “Thy will be done” The clear sound of freedom’s bell recedes, as we ignore the chains that bind our  to sin "Those people who will not be governed by God will be ruled by tyrants." – William Penn

Angels & the Devil Powers and Principalities Heavenly Powers Subordinate, not equal to God, their role is limited H H H Heb 1:6-7; Eph 6:12 The media present an imbalanced view of the spiritual world Even the devil must get permission to act J J J Job 1:12; Job 2:6 Angels & the Devil Angels worship & serve God; Like man, they have free will Heb 1:14 ; Rev 19:10 W W W We are an object lesson for their learning about G-D 1 Pet 1:12; Luke 20:36 1/3 have rebelled and become adversaries (HaSatan, demons) Rev 12:4 The devil can masquerade as an angel of light 2 Cor 11:14; 2 Th 2:9 Angels will be judged by men (sons of G-D) Cor 6:3 Ministers sent to comfort us … or tormentors allowed to test us? Cor 12:7 Principalities: behind earthly rulers and idolatrous systems Political ideologies, not just religious systems 2 extremes: From tyranny to anarchy [there is no true democracy], all fail to exercise justice & mercy Micah 6:8; Amos 5:15; John 7:24; Acts 4:19; Jn 5:19; Ps 9:7-9; Is 2:3-4; Is 11:3-4; Is 42:3-4; Acts 17:31 Direct Aggression – Ex: Islam = Forced subjugation to Allah’s will “Religious” notion of submission uses pagan despotic rule & violence Matt 20:25 Deceptive Intrusion – Ex: Eastern religions & New Age, charismania “As you think so you become” … Become God? Is 14 “Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time” Rev 12:12

The Power of A Lie Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil What’s good for one is evil for another? No absolutes standards of good and evil? “Defining evil” leads to conflict & suffering? Judging anyone is unreasonable? Personal accountability is a choice? Politically Correct

Authority & Freedom “Notions of good and evil are a form of social repression… by a collective conscience whose capricious standards change over time and between cultures” “We can return to primitive innocence by doing away with repressive moral notions” primitive utopias of cultural anthropologists, nudist colonies, liberal agenda Beatles: All you need is love “Authority restrains freedom” Everybody does it, so it’s OK? Power + Pleasure = Dangerous Licence A perverted conscience cannot return to primitive innocence It projects its perversion into “primitive” contexts You can’t buy innocence: the truth alone sets free “Authority empowers good by constraining evil” AssumptionsReality Can Getting Rid Of A Repressive Conscience Eliminate Evil?

All Rebels in a Restless Society Impulse = Untrained Will Too much hurry: We rush to do evil and inch toward the good Idolatry = Weak Conscience Too little shame: We honor the unworthy and disrespect the worthy Irresponsibility = Unwilling Heart T Too little courage: We shun effort & hardship, and blame others for our faults & burdens Ignorance = Unchallenged Mind Too much brainwashing: We follow the crowd and dress up our choices as rights

The Beast, The Whore and Lawlessness Mystery of Babylon and of the Beast “This title was written on her forehead: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH…” Rev 17:4-8 “I am and there is no one besides me” Is 47:8-10 The bride of heresy & blasphemy married to AntiMessiah She persecutes the saints (qedoshim = sanctified ones) “In one Day” judgment on Babylon Isaiah 47:9; Rev 18:8 Destined to become a city without a bride Jer 16:9; 25:10 Contrast: After Babylon’s destruction in Rev 19:3 comes the Wedding of the Lamb to the refined Bride called “New Jerusalem” Jer 7:34; Jer 33:11; Rev 21:2ff

Two Cities and Two Brides A Story of Restoration: Lazarus and the Rich Man Luke 16:19-31 BabylonJerusalem Teaches good is evil and evil is good Good & evil are realigned Endless strife “But now he is comforted” Violence of the wicked Abuser (wicked) no longer a threat Abuser (wicked) no longer a threat Sacred boundaries always violated No going back: “A great chasm has been fixed” Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:10 There is a pretender bride who wants the house of peace without the Bridegroom of Righteousness

Wisdom Counsels Law Law Law is subject to divine wisdom whose goal is to shun evil and preserve life – Job 28:20-28 The The order of creation reflects Divine Law led by perfect wisdom – Pr 8:22-31, 12-17, Human Human laws guided by human wisdom must be subordinate to divine law – Psalm 19:7-10 Human Corruption Perverts Justice Self-righteousness Self-righteousness is worse than sin in that man deceives himself and as long as man is judge, the sin of partiality impairs the execution of justice – Mt 6:22-23; Phil 3:8-9 Focus Focus on “human rights” diminishes “human responsibility” & nullifies divine standard – Gal 5:14 Men Men become artful dodgers of human law: We make laws an unmerciful burden for others, but manipulate it to put a “respectable face” on our own corruption As Scapegoat, Our Bridegroom Effects Mercy What What man can’t do, G-D did through His Word made perfect in the flesh atoning for our sins (live a sinless life + make it an offering for sins of others) Justice Justice effected by God’s own arm through sacrifice of His own Son provides mercy – Rom 8:2 Messiah’s Messiah’s sacrifice fulfills the Divine code of holiness “Be Holy as I am holy” and also sanctifies the Bride led by the Spirit, no longer under law – Rom 5:17-18; Gal 5:18,22-24 The Wise Bridegroom & The 1st Scapegoat

Shifting or Taking the Blame? Shifting… From Adam & Eve to Cain … to us Our gut reaction is to shift blame on someone else It is popular to blame the sins of the children on the parents It is popular to blame the sins of criminals on their upbringing It is popular to exonerate the sin of the perpetrator at the expense of the victim because no one knows how to reverse the cycle of violence Yeshua the bridegroom takes the blame “But everybody does it” is no longer an excuse If the world jumps off the cliff, will you follow and jump off the cliff, too? Behold the lamb who takes the sin of the world (He reversed the curse) He loves the world, not by following the ways of the world, but by admitting the reality of evil, refusing to rationalize it away, thus giving us no choice but to do the same, i.e. care for the victims, leave vengeance to the Lord, forgive and pray for the persecutors. STOP! Do not become like them! Be like HIM. “Father, Forgive them for they know not what they do”

The Son Conquers All, Even Death Perfected Perfected by suffering, obedient unto death, and raised uncorrupted Name Name above all names Eph 1:17-29 Yeshua, Yeshua, the only just ruler will judge the living and the dead Is Is 42:3-4; John 5:27; 8:15-16; Acts 10:42; Rom 2:16 “All “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me … Therefore Therefore make disciples of all nations Matt 28:18-20 Yeshua Yeshua is King forever Over Over all kings & rulers of all nations Is 11: 1-10; Is 49:15; 49:15; Ps 2 Yeshua Yeshua is L-RD forever Over Over all powers and principalities Mk 1:27; 1 Cor 15:24-25; Col 2:15; Heb 2:14; 1 Jn 4:4; Rom 16:20 Yeshua overcame the Prince of this world “Now the ruler of this world is cast out and I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.” John 12:31-33 “The last enemy to be destroyed is death” 1 Corinthians 15:26 “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” J n 11:25-26

The Offense of the Firstborn He He is…the firstborn from the dead, so that in all things He may have the pre- eminence eminence Col 1:18 This This was the master plan of G-D: to have others come into position as sons, with Yeshua as the older brother. The "bottom line" offense in Judaism is Yeshua's position as the the firstborn. Sanctify Sanctify unto me all the firstborn firstborn Ex 13:2 The The firstborn son has a "double" portion of authority among the other children: 1. to preserve the unity of the extended family. 2. to extend what was the father's authority to the rest of the family as it grows and multiplies. That That He might be the firstborn among many brethren brethren Rom 8:29 Yeshua Yeshua holds now a position of double authority until the end of the millennium. 1 st 1 st He is a representative of the Father's authority. 2 nd 2 nd He has the authority of the older brother. The authority of the older brother is secondary secondary to the authority of the father. father. 1 Cor 15:28 Israel Israel is my son, even my firstborn firstborn Ex 4:22 Israel Israel is the first nation with a remnant of faith. The nations of the world are offended at Israel for being the firstborn; The "bottom line" offense in both Islam and Christianity is Israel's position as the firstborn. Giving Giving him a double portion of all that he has; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is His. His. Deut 21:17 The The firstborn must go first. Judges 1: His role is to provide unity for the extended family. He gets a double vote in tribal decisions. He can lose his position like Esau, Reuben, Simon & Levi. You You have come to Mt. Zion…to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven heaven …Heb 12:22-23 G-D's G-D's idea of "election" is inclusive: inclusive: Anyone who chooses to believe in G-D through Yeshua the Messiah is also chosen, and becomes part of the "assembly" of the firstborn… The The same principle holds for natural families, for the Church, and for Israel: Alocal congregation is like a group of families. The head elder or pastor is like the elder brother in the extended family. He does not replace G-D's Fatherly authority, but his leadership is needed to provide unity and direction for the group. Each Each extended family has its own firstborn son. Yeshua is the firstborn from the dead of the human race though not all the resurrected have eternal life. Israel, though only a remnant, is the firstborn nation. In the "restoration of all things" (Acts 3:19) G-D will restore the position of the firstborn to fulfill its positive role in the predestined plan of G-D.

4. Mystery of G-dliness “And without controversy great is the mystery of g-dliness: G-D appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, seen of angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.” 1 Timothy 3:16 “The Father abiding in Me does His works” John 14:10 “But you know Him [The Spirit of truth]...” “for He dwells with you, and shall be in you.” John 14:16-17 It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. John 16:7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Messiah apportioned it. This is why it says: "When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.” Eph 4:7-8; Ps 68:18

The Holy Spirit: A Chaperon for the Bride Self-control = Taking responsibility for what you think, say & do before G-D Self-control = Taking responsibility for what you think, say & do before G-D We are tempted (enticed) by our own nature James 1:13-15 We are tempted (enticed) by our own nature James 1:13-15 We cannot hide from His presence Job 34:22; Ps 90:8; Ps 31:20; Ps 139:7 We cannot hide from His presence Job 34:22; Ps 90:8; Ps 31:20; Ps 139:7 We battle not with the flesh, but spiritual forces 2 Cor 10:3-6 We battle not with the flesh, but spiritual forces 2 Cor 10:3-6 Satan is an intruder and a usurper, the Spirit is an invited guest Satan is an intruder and a usurper, the Spirit is an invited guest Spirit is the Gardener: Weeds take over, good plants must be tended – John 15:1-3 Spirit is the Gardener: Weeds take over, good plants must be tended – John 15:1-3 A stronghold is the seat from where Satan is allowed to rule the heart A stronghold is the seat from where Satan is allowed to rule the heart Satan: “You’ll always be defeated over this”– Spirit: encourages in spite of and through failure Satan: “You’ll always be defeated over this”– Spirit: encourages in spite of and through failure The Spirit of God = Power of G-D = overcomes all temptation The Spirit of God = Power of G-D = overcomes all temptation “I don’t need God” = “I have the power” → failure John 15:4-6: Ps 51:11 “I don’t need God” = “I have the power” → failure John 15:4-6: Ps 51:11 Bring struggles & addictions to God who can provide a way of escape – Ps 89:15 Bring struggles & addictions to God who can provide a way of escape – Ps 89:15 When the old captain is replaced by a new one, the crew needs time to adjust When the old captain is replaced by a new one, the crew needs time to adjust The new captain must counter every order from the old captain with a new order The new captain must counter every order from the old captain with a new order Confrontation uses divine weapons: helmet, shield, sword, belt, shoes Confrontation uses divine weapons: helmet, shield, sword, belt, shoes Avoiding confrontation is like going behind enemy lines & surrendering the field Avoiding confrontation is like going behind enemy lines & surrendering the field Before engaging, ask yourself: “Is this the hill you want to die on?” Before engaging, ask yourself: “Is this the hill you want to die on?” Take every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah: “G-D’s will be done” Dan 3:16-18 Take every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah: “G-D’s will be done” Dan 3:16-18 Demolish every argument / pretension, idea that usurps the place only God can fill Demolish every argument / pretension, idea that usurps the place only God can fill Appealing from the right position requires discernment → Victory over Darkness Appealing from the right position requires discernment → Victory over Darkness On the Rock: Disarm Satan by wielding the Sword of Truth against yourself first On the Rock: Disarm Satan by wielding the Sword of Truth against yourself first By doing so, all will see the Word of G-D means something to you. 22 Lessons of the Spirit Prov 20:27 The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord searching all the inner depths of his heart He will provide for the needs, not the lust of the flesh Hunger, thirst, sleep, sex ≠ gluttony, drunkenness, sloth, lust Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh G G G Gal 5:16-17 The lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world John 2:16 The true circumcision worships in the Spirit of God, glories in Messiah Yeshua and puts no confidence in the flesh P P P Philippians 3:3 As strangers & pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, that war against the soul 1 1 Pet 2:11 The L-RD knows how to deliver the g-dly out of temptation and to reserve the unjust who walk after the flesh for the day of judgment 2 Pet 2:9-11 Hang on to your faith in Messiah when your soul/spirit is distressed Don’t fret: His Spirit will overflow to give you peace Php 4:6- 7; Rom 8:6; Rom 15:13 By pleasing God thus, He can make your enemies at peace with you Proverbs 16:7 Make sure your faith anchors your soul to God through His Spirit … Not to a counterfeit, lest your rope be cut and you find yourself alone in deep waters Abiding in Him means real anointing 1 John 2:27 He desires to pour His Spirit upon you as His beloved Even, upon your flesh to sanctify it and make you a filled vessel for his glory Vessels of honor vs. vessels of dishonor Tim 2:19-21

G-dliness = Abiding in the Vine In In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves loves Me; Me; and and he who loves loves Me will be loved loved by My Father, Father, and I will love love him and will disclose Myself to him. "If "If anyone loves loves Me, he will keep My word; word; and and My Father will love him, him, and we will come to him and make our abode with him. John 14:20-21, 23 We start with a contrite   Which causes G-D to indwell us, Enabling us to heed Messiah’s Word, Resulting in obedience of faith Indwelling us means the giving of Himself to us: He fills us with His Spirit, empowers us for good deeds & equips us with gifts.

The entire Law is summed up in a single command: “As I have loved you, so you must love one another” “Love your neighbor as yourself” Gal 5:14 John 13:34 The Law of Messiah Written on the Bride’s  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. Jas 3:17-18

Order in the House of G-D For G-D is not a G-D of disorder but of peace… Citizens Citizens of Heaven follow the Rule of the Kingdom Kingdom Php 3:20-21 Rule Rule of the Kingdom evidenced by spiritual fruit, not gifts gifts Gal 5:6b,18,22; Rom 13:8 Where Where the [fruit of the] Spirit is, there is no law law Gal 5:13-24; Rom 13:8; 1 Cor 4:4-5 Law Law of Freedom & Ecclesial Polity Polity Rom 13:3; 1 Cor 8:9; 9:19; 10:29; 2 Cor 3:17 Impartiality Impartiality & truth in love love Eph 4:15; Jas 2:1-12 Judgment Judgment Begins at the House of G-D, not outside We We examine self self 1 Cor 11:27-32; 2 Cor 13:5; Mt 5:23-24; John 13:34; 1 Jn4:20 We We judge not persons (though we test spirits) spirits) Is 11:2-5; Mt 7:1-2; Lk 6:36-38; Jn 5:22,30; 7:24; 8:15-16; 12:47-48; 1 Cor 4:5; 5:12-13; 10:28-31; Rom 3:7; 14:3-13 We We prefer (submit to) one another another Rom 10:12; Eph 5:21; 1 Cor 11:29 We We accept correction 1 Tim 1:8-9; 2 Tim 2:15; 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Tim 4:2 Biblical Biblical justice inside the Body upholds covenant integrity & boundaries for the Household of G-D (flock) Confronting Confronting & Forgiving Forgiving Mt 7:2; Mt 18:15-18; Lk 6:37; Mk 9:50 Disfellowshipping: Disfellowshipping: Fellowship with unbelievers outside church is allowed, but not inside Titus 3:10-11; 1 Cor 5:5-13; 2 Cor 2:6-8 Disputes: Disputes: A believer is a better judge than an expert judge who is an unbeliever! Matt 5:25; Luke 12:58; 1 Cor 6:1-11 Koinonia = “Owe no one anything, except to love one another.” Rom 13:8

Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment! Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment! James 2:13 The law that gives freedom (mercifulness) Is just: Benefits both the lawbreaker & the law-abider Authority to forgive & not forgive others Jn 20:23 Parables: the unforgiving steward & the Prodigal son As you judge, so you’ll be judged Law of Messiah rules through mercy But the words of men condemn them Generational Sins & Forgiveness across generations Do we really possess the greater power to mess things up, than does G-D to fix them? It is a subtle twisted form of pride and idolatry to believe that what we HAVE done is more powerful than what G-D CAN do. “Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Messiah” Gal 6:2 Truth Freedom Mercy

The How of “Shepherding” On the journey of life, the parent toes a thin line to admonish his following child against both sin and self-righteousness. He must model the hatred of evil and resistance to temptation, not just warn against the deception of sin. He must acknowledge human failings, model repentance and learn from his own mistakes so as not to fall into self- righteousness. Falling on either side puts self on a pedestal = idolatry. Teach through action by example, but when using words, remember to include not just the features (what?) but also the benefits (why?). Ex: “You shall have no other gods before me,” so that you may encounter the True God and delight in Him. We do not want blind obedience, but one that appropriates virtue as its own reward. SIN SELF RIGHTEOUSNESS P C We are hard-wired from birth to worship, so it’s not ‘if’ but ‘What’? ‘WHO’?

The Sailboat Analogy When sailing, an experienced sailor knows it does not matter which way the wind blows, it is the trim of the sail in relation to the wind which determines the direction of the boat. A child, to a very deep level, is shaped, or “inclined” either toward self, or toward G-d in his or her upbringing. BUT, there is a certain point at which, our children, as they get older, make their own choices as to which direction their “sail” will be inclined: to the winds of the Ruach HaKodesh (the Spirit of the Living God) or to the winds of the world. A child, Lord willing, lives to adulthood. While parents who offer nothing but a life of sin-ridden shaping influences are at fault, it is the adult child’s responsibility TO SEEK THE CHANGES ONLY GOD CAN MAKE. Dress, Dress, ornaments Education, Education, Popularity, profession Where Where does my provision come from? Wealth, Wealth, prosperity Health, Health, fertility Who Who / what do I look to for comfort? Counsel, Counsel, rest Fun, Fun, entertainment (delight) Dynamics Dynamics of worship: altar, sacrifice, God behind the altar Ex: Ex: media, happiness, peace You You become like your idol, comatose Your Your 5 spiritual senses are dulled, never seeing, never hearing … Look Look to the acceptable altar: His cross, not mine and yield your trust there Idols require sacrifice from your own resources Jer 19:4-5 From this exchange develops a lifestyle In order to identify who you truly worship and tear down false idols, examine your lifestyle (not just what your belief system is) The royal priesthood of Messiah is a lifestyle Circumcise your : When you tear down your altars, He exchanges your heart of stone with a heart of flesh. The L-RD alone is my defense, my comfort, my provider, the one who lifts up my head There is a war for our affections: know that you are loved by the Master of the Universe who alone can provide the acceptable sacrifice

New Sacrifices The point of sacrifice is to have intimacy with God, to know (“yada”) Him Yeshua is the only acceptable sacrifice. The sacrifice is appreciated through the five senses as an intimate exchange between Him and the bride If we abide in Yeshua (consecration=ola) the Father smells His Son’s sweet fragrance In our prayers, praise & songs of thanksgiving, He hears us call Him Abba, as Yeshua does He tastes the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace…) in our fellowship offering (shlamim) He sees the likeness of Yeshua in our witness Like the woman who touched his tzitzit by faith he transfers virtue through touch that exchanges our uncleanliness with His cleanliness and we are never the same again If we are not transformed, our worship is lip service Mal 3:2-3 He builds the altar, provides the sacrifice and exchanges life for death! Lay your idols down: The choice is a no-brainer! Idols: cruel, demand my life, time, children, turn me into a perverse being YHWH: loving, offers life, eternity, children, righteousness and makes me holy

Myth #1: Self-Forgiveness Self-forgiveness is not in the Bible Camouflages Camouflages underlying issues Guilt, Guilt, self-recrimination, self-accusation, brooding & despair Disbelieving Disbelieving depths of G-D’s forgiveness Unwilling Unwilling to see depths of one’s own sin or to be accountable to another Venting Venting regret for perceived failures Need Need to supplement G-D’s or others’ insufficient forgiveness Acts Acts as righteous lawgiver, judge, as well as sacrifice for sins Overly Overly active critical spirit seeks to replace G-D’s standards of behavior with its own or someone else’s (self-righteousness/fear of man) The The solution Maintain Maintain the bounds of self-examination focused on biblical standards & promises Remain Remain accountable to G-D & others (vertical and horizontal forgiveness) Accept Accept the consequences of a cleared or uncleared record of our lives “Hate “Hate the sin, not the sinner” applies to self as well as others Sin is heinous: It is a direct offense to G-D & his creatures, but G-D’s pardon is complete because he is able to free us from the slavery of sin

Myth #2: Unconditional Love? Blanket Blanket acceptance “as you are” with NO expectations… Detached, Detached, general, impersonal, tolerant, passive, unintrusive Based Based on humanistic “unconditional positive regard” It It rightfully hates & avoids manipulative approval motivated by selfish caprice (i.e. our human experience of ‘conditional love’) Dilutes Dilutes standards → standards → I’m OK, you’re OK →lie: G-D will accept me ‘warts and all’ G-D’s G-D’s love is better than unconditional love (brit+chesed+shebu’ah) It It is active, personal, intense, involved, committed to forgiving & changing us is both a gift to the utterly g-dless and an expectation of g-dliness Unmerited Unmerited grace does not depend on our conditioned performance, but on what Messiah did for us (G-D bears the cost) The The opposite of high capricious expectations is not “NO expectations” opposite of bossy might seem to be non-directive, but it isn’t. isn’t. The opposite of manipulation is NOT dispassionate tolerance, but zeal & self-sacrifice Unlike Unlike unconditional love which is undemanding and does not insist on changing us, G-D’s love is a call to “turn,” a lifelong agenda of rehab to fix what’s wrong in us & make us fit to live with If If you receive blanket acceptance, you need no repentance. It fills you without humbling you. It relaxes you without upsetting you about yourself, or thrilling you about Messiah. “unconditional “unconditional love” sidesteps reality and keeps company with teachings that say to people, “peace, peace,” when from G-D’s holy point of view, there is no peace” Jer 23:14,16f G-D’s love is unfathomable!

Deny Self? Why put off personal gain, merit, honor, self-will, self-love? Why give up one’s own rights & the pursuit of the pleasures of this world? Why put off personal gain, merit, honor, self-will, self-love? Why give up one’s own rights & the pursuit of the pleasures of this world? Because G-D Himself is our pride, glory, honor, wealth, and delight Because G-D Himself is our pride, glory, honor, wealth, and delight A true Messianic follower knows the new Adam in us has no right to anything from above since he has it all by grace. A true Messianic follower knows the new Adam in us has no right to anything from above since he has it all by grace. Therefore we make use of all gifts with fear and trembling, in moderate measure when it comes to personal needs, but in liberal generosity when it comes to others’ needs. Therefore we make use of all gifts with fear and trembling, in moderate measure when it comes to personal needs, but in liberal generosity when it comes to others’ needs. Messiah’s cross was to bear the penalty of blame, even unto death, for other’s sins Messiah’s cross was to bear the penalty of blame, even unto death, for other’s sins Smyrna: I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!

Fruit? Godly Offspring By By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. Yet Yet it was the L-RD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the L-RD makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand. Is 53:8,10 They They will not build & another inhabit, they will not plant & another eat; For as the lifetime of a tree, so will be the days of My people, And My chosen ones will wear out the work of their hands. "They will not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; For For they are are the offspring of those blessed by the L-RD, And their descendants with them. "It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear hear Is 65:22-24

Blessed are the Uncool For they shall live in His light Chasing Chasing after “cool” Cool Cool is a destination, a security blanket, a coping reflex All All strains of “cool” yield fickle, fruitless and inauthentic lives Hiding Hiding behind sunglasses = our private performance of rebellion for rebellion’s sake Alienation: Alienation: fear of irrelevance, loneliness, shame Exclusion: Exclusion: antisocial insider cliques that are less about looking out for each other, more about excluding outsiders Frustration: Frustration: “To define is to limit” – We’re never done being cool yet we insist on our personal authority to define our self, and to know others without being known Intimacy Intimacy with G-D helps us live authentically in a world of show In In the place of cool, G-D offers His beloved community in whom exclusion is replaced with love, the fear of being known is relieved by faith in the One who knows us most fully. We are the genuine community, His Bride that needs not hide
