Human Development Infancy and Childhood Stage Physical Development
I. What are some things newborns are born with? A.Infancy = the period of time from birth to two years B.Childhood = is defined as the period of time from two years to adolescence C.Every newborn enters the world possessing certain physical characteristics and equipped with certain abilities Examples: Instincts Reflexes Baby survival instincts
II. Development of Height and Weight A.The most dramatic gains in height and weight occur before an infants birth -during first eight weeks the baby develops fingers, toes, eyes, ears, a nose, a mouth, a heart, and circulatory system B.During the nine months of pregnancy, the embryo goes from a microscopic cell to a baby of about 20 inches in length -a newborn weighs about billion times more than at conception C.During infancy, children usually double their weight in five months, triple it in one year. *Mr. Black = 11 lb baby. *Ohio’s Abortion Law
III. Motor Development A.Motor development is the development of purposeful movement -baby rolls over before they sit up -baby crawls before they walk *Example: Reflexes= inborn, not learned processes that occur automatically, without thinking *Help a person survive in his/her environment
