August 8 - 14, 2010 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” (Ezekiel 33:6, New International Version) Weekly World Watch Andy Walton’s To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north.” The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south.” Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. WWW presentations in PowerPoint can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.clicking here The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible.. I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW:
HEADLINE EVENT COMMENT News Photo The source of the headline and the date are included. Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. What is in a Weekly World Watch? BIBLE QUOTE This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse) This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. Russia ban on grain export begins Russia has imposed a ban on grain exports until the end of the year, after a severe drought and a spate of wildfires devastated crops. Russia is one of the world's biggest producers of wheat, barley and rye, and the ban is likely to see bread prices rise in places like the Middle East. The measures are designed to keep domestic food prices under control. But agriculture ministry data has revealed that this year's crop is unlikely to meet even domestic demand. Hundreds of wildfires have been burning across central Russia in the last three weeks. President Dmitry Medvedev predicted that the measures could be lifted before the end of the year. But Prime Minister Vladimir Putin suggested the ban could remain in place until well into 2011. Mr Putin said that this year's crop could be as low as 60 million tonnes, well below last year's 97 million, and Russia needs almost 80 million tonnes to cover domestic consumption, so even with this ban, there might be a shortfall of nearly 20 million tonnes for the Russian consumer. BBConline, August 15, 2010 EVENT COMMENT And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: God is speaking to Gog – leader of the Russians. It is God that “forces” Russia to come down… BIBLE QUOTE (Ezekiel 38:4) It may come as surprise that Russia is one of the world’s largest producers of wheat, barley and rye. In fact it normally produces 10% of the world’s total output! 20% of this total is exported to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Jesus says that there will be “famines and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.” (Luke 21:10,11) before he returns. Famine is used by God to not only judge but also to influence. Abraham was forced to go to Egypt because of famine. Joseph’s family was forced to go to Egypt because of famine. Perhaps this famine (caused by fire) will force Russia to go where it might not have gone otherwise. God’s hooks are being inserted into Russia’s jaws….
Grain price rise may fuel Mideast and Europe unrest Rising grain prices from Russia's drought and fires will pressure populations already hit by the financial crisis and could stoke unrest -- particularly in the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe. Wheat prices have risen by nearly 70 percent since June after Russia suffered its worst drought in 130 years and are at their highest since 2008, when the last major food price rally sparked protests and riots in a string of emerging nations. The Middle East and North Africa, particularly Egypt, are regarded as particularly vulnerable, as are emerging and southern European countries where discontent has already been fuelled by harsh cuts in public spending, benefits and pay. "Grain imports are particularly sensitive in the Middle East and North Africa -- bread is such a crucial staple of the diet," said Metsa Rahimi, analyst at security consultant Janusian. "Eastern Europe is also an obvious area of risk." Reuters, August 11, 2010 EVENT COMMENT Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. BIBLE QUOTE (Luke 21:10) This report in Reuters confirms that unrest may well come from rising wheat prices. Interestingly the areas mostly effected are “Middle East and North Africa, and Egypt”. We quoted on the previous slide that Jesus told us to look for “famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs”. In the previous verse he says “Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:”. As the food supply of the earth begins to run short (famine) we may well see more conflict between nations. Russia may also use this grain crisis to increase its influence. Stratfor, (a Global intelligence site) believes Russia may use the crisis to pull together nearby producers Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine to form a regional grain cartel. Russia has used its energy supplies as a political weapon. It may well do so with its grain exports as well…
Russia says to start up Iran Bushehr plant August 21 Russia said on Friday it will begin loading nuclear fuel into the reactor of Iran's first atomic power station on August 21, an irreversible step marking the start-up of the Bushehr plant after nearly 40 years of delays. Russia agreed in 1995 to build the Bushehr plant on the site of a project begun in the 1970s by German company Siemens, but delays have haunted the $1 billion project and diplomats say Moscow has used it as a lever in relations with Tehran. The United States has criticized Moscow for pushing ahead with the Bushehr project at a time when major powers including Russia are pressing Tehran to allay fears that its nuclear energy program may be geared to develop weapons. But Western fears that the Bushehr project could help Iran develop a nuclear weapon were lessened when Moscow reached an agreement with Tehran obliging it to return spent fuel to Russia. Weapons-grade plutonium can be derived from spent fuel rods. Reuters, August 13, 2010 EVENT COMMENT There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit. BIBLE QUOTE Russian and Iranian specialists are to begin loading uranium-packed fuel rods into the reactor on August 21, a process that will take about 2-3 weeks. This is an irreversible step. At that moment, the Bushehr nuclear power plant will be certified as a nuclear energy installation The head of Iran's nuclear energy agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, said a ceremony inaugurating the plant would be held in late September or early October, when the fuel is moved "to the heart of the reactor.“ The fear is that Iran’s nuclear energy program may be geared to develop weapons. The time of a showdown between Israel and Iran is getting closer. The Bushehr reactor is in the ancient area of Elam. The verse below may speak of a future time… (Ezekiel 32:24)
Russia Deploys Anti-Aircraft Missiles in Abkhazia Russia announced Wednesday that it has moved a sophisticated anti-aircraft missile system into Georgia's breakaway republic of Abkhazia. The deployment of the S-300s drew immediate protest from Georgia. The Foreign Ministry called it an "extremely dangerous and provocative step that presents a threat not only to the Black Sea region but to European security as a whole." Following a brief war against Georgia two years ago, Russia has steadily increased military ties with Abkhazia and another breakaway Georgian republic, South Ossetia. Earlier this year, both republics agreed to allow Russia to establish military bases on their territory with up to 1,700 troops stationed at each base. The commander of Russia's air force, Gen. Alexander Zelin, said the S-300s were intended to protect Abkhazia's air space and provide for the security of the republic, Russian news agencies reported. He said a different air defence system has been deployed in South Ossetia. Associated Press, August 11, 2010 EVENT COMMENT and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. The king of the north = Russia Russia is busy at the moment… cutting of its wheat exports, helping Iran launch its nuclear reactor and now deploying missiles in Abkhazia. The Georgian government minister, Temur Yakobashvili said the missiles' deployment was "directed not so much against Georgia as against NATO and the U.S., which intend to place their own missile defence system in Eastern Europe." These missiles can shoot down aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missile warheads at ranges of over 90 miles. When Russia does invade the Middle East it will come down through Georgia. As we see these missiles stationed on Georgia’s border we also see that time approaching. BIBLE QUOTE (Daniel 11:40)
PA to announce renewal of direct talks 'within days' Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will announce the start of direct peace negotiations with Israel in only "a matter of days," a senior official in the Obama administration told Haaretz over the weekend. A number of minor details need to be clarified with Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that will open the way for direct talks, the official added. Sources in Washington say the Palestinians are likely to announce the start of direct negotiations as early as Monday, and a similar announcement will be made by the Quartet of Mideast mediators, which will call for the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders within a year or two. Contrary to the optimism in Washington, Israeli officials are trying to show toughness regarding preconditions. "Israel is not willing to agree to any preconditions from the back door via a Quartet announcement that will serve as a basis for the negotiations," an official in Jerusalem said. Haartez, August 15, 2010 EVENT COMMENT For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. We may be getting close to people saying “peace and security” As we near a crucial time with Iran with also near a crucial time for Israel. The enormous pressure applied to Israel to enter talks with the Palestinians is about to bear fruit for Obama. A carefully choreographed set of announcements may well begin to take place over the next few days. Statements from the Quartet calling on the establishment of a Palestinian State based on 1967 borders. If an announcement is made this week on resuming direct talks, a ceremony is expected to be held inaugurating the process. We can hear the words before they are said… this is a time of hope, a chance for peace and the creation of a new state for the Palestinians. It will quickly lead to war… BIBLE QUOTE (1 Thessalonians 5:3)
New EU ambassador claims transatlantic authority Joao Vale de Almeida was this week formally installed as the EU's ambassador to the US, and suggested that American officials should regard him as their first point of contact for transatlantic discussions. He is the first EU ambassador to be appointed after the controversial Lisbon Treaty gave the EU sweeping new powers The new ambassador claimed to now be "leading the show" among European representatives in Washington. The prospect of an EU official speaking for the UK to its most important ally has angered eurosceptics, who said it shows Britain's waning influence. Mr Vale de Almeida has stressed to Washington officials and politicians that under the EU's' Lisbon Treaty, he has more power than his predecessors. "I'm the first new type of ambassador for the European Union anywhere in the world," he said. "I'm supposed to have a wider mandate than my predecessors." Mr Vale de Almeida said: "Our delegations now cover a wide spectrum of issues well beyond the economic dimension, trade dimension and regulatory dimension, to cover all policies in the union, including foreign policy and security policy." Daily Telegraph, August 12, 2010 EVENT COMMENT And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. BIBLE QUOTE (Revelation 17:12,13) You are looking at the very first EU ambassador. When the Lisbon Treaty came into force on 1 st December 2009, Europe became a legal entity for the first time. When this happened it enabled Europe to speak with ONE voice. Therefore ambassadors were created and embassies around the world were setup. All this is an incredible fulfilment of Bible prophecy. Revelation 17 speaks of these exact events. In symbolic language it tells us of a beast coming out of a bottomless pit. It tells us that kings will give their power and strength to the beast. The beast is Europe.
