For example, a long time ago there was a certain English earl who loved to play cards. One day when he was in the middle of an exciting game of cards he felt hungry. Since he did not want to waste time at the dinner table, he asked his host for a slice of beef between two slices of bread. Everyone thought that this new way of eating was a wonderful invention. This new invention soon became a custom and was called a sandwich. You can probably guess how it got the name….the man was the Earl of Sandwich. Sandwich is a small place in the southeast of England.
