3 HISTORYThis October marks the 25th anniversary of Red Ribbon Week. In 1985Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena was killed by drugtraffickers. In honor of his memory and his battle against illegal drugs,friends, neighbors, and parents began to wear red badges of satin. Parentsformed coalitions that embraced Camarena’s belief that one person canmake a difference. The coalitions adopted the symbol of the red ribbonas their commitment to the creation of a drug free America. Congressofficially proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week, Octoberthe 23rd through the 31st in The Red Ribbon has now become asymbol for the drug free movement.
