Asia Japan joins the Allies and seizes German holdings in China and islands in the Pacific.
WWI and Colonies Many got soldiers and supplies from their colonies. This was especially true for England. They had many soldiers fight from Canada and India. The French used many troops from their African colonies.
US and WWI When war starts, US is neutral. Most people support Allies because of historical and cultural ties to England. Others, though, with German or Irish heritage support the Central Powers. Most Americans do not think the US should enter the war, though, because it has nothing to do with them.
US and Trade US wants to sell things to both sides.
Blockades Great Britain has strongest navy in the world. Sets up navel blockade to stop Germans from getting supplies. Germans respond with their own blockade, but with U-Boats (subs). They sink ships without warning and therefore end up killing people. Many people become upset with Germany
U-Boats and the US Germans begin sinking US ships without warning. This upsets the US President—Woodrow Wilson.
The Lusitania British Ocean liner Over 1,000 killed 134 Americans (many were woman and children) Was also carrying weapons for England.
Sinking of the Lusitania
Sussex Pledge After the Germans sink another ship, the Sussex, they promise that they won’t sink anymore ships without warning. This is the Sussex pledge.
Breaking of the Sussex Pledge Germans eventually break the pledge and begin sinking US ships without warning again.
Zimmerman Telegram Message from Germany to Mexico. Intercepted by the British. Germans promise Mexico the territory that it had lost to the US if Mexico helps Germany if the US enters the war.
US enters the War Reasons why US enters WWI: 1. Germans break the Sussex pledge and keep sinking US ships. 2. The Zimmerman Telegram
US in WWI Sends thousands of troops to fight in France. US soldiers called “Doughboys.” Fresh troops help give Allies the advantage they need to win.
