Dangerous Ingredients Cont’d Creatine ◦Increases muscle mass ◦Creatine draws water to muscles from rest of the body ◦Major problem is causes dehydration because of the water going into muscles and not the rest of the body
FDA Changes to any ingredients Fda cracked down on any and all supplements that listed DMAA as their active ingredient Had to take it out of the products for a while and build up a different formula involving different amounts of DMAA ◦Too Much DMAA had been known to cause heart attacks and increased blood pressure
Jack3d Controversy April 16, 2013 – New FDA warning for DMAA. March 13, 2013 – The first-ever DMAA lawsuit has been filed in San Diego on behalf of a 22 year-old soldier who died of a cardiac arrest during routine physical training after using the recommended dosage of Jack3D the morning before his training. January 31, 2013 – The DMAA supplement Jack3D has been linked to the death of a woman who died while running the London Marathon in April last year. January 23, 2013 – USPLabs has agreed to settle a DMAA class action lawsuit for $2
Controversy cont’d. h April 27, 2012 –USP Labs, LLC, the company that manufactures and distributes Jack3d and OxyElite Pro, has just received a warning letter form the FDA. The FDA has concluded that “synthetically-produced DMAA is not a ‘dietary ingredient’ and, therefore, is not eligible to be used as an active ingredient in a dietary supplement.” The company is being specifically cited for failing to provide the FDA with a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification. By law, all supplements that contain ingredients introduced after 1994 must provide the FDA with an NDI with evidence of the safety of the ingredient. Because manufacturers have never provided the FDA with this information, supplements containing DMAA are adulterated. Furthermore, the FDA warns that DMAA is known to cause blood vessel constriction, which can elevate blood pressure and increase the risk of deadly heart attacks. Has also been linked to death of 22 year old soldier ◦Took jack3d before 3.5 mile run and died of cardiac arrest
Research On Jack3d Study done at University of Texas Arlington ◦Only 6 participants (college aged males) ◦Had placebo and group who took jack3d ◦Were tested on 1RM for bench and leg press, along with treadmill work along with skinfold testing ◦Conclusion Subjects given placebo had no change in 1RM and leg press Both groups did have changes in pre and post tests Tests were really flawed and not much else has given conclusive evidence on way or the other for Jack3d
