* The Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976 allows the EPA to regulate new commercial chemicals before they enter the market, to regulate existing chemicals when they pose a risk to human/environmental health, and to regulate their distribution and use. * Through the TSCA, the EPA regulates chemicals such as asbestos, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) * Asbestos: naturally occurring minerals that separate into durable fibers. Cause disease/cancer in humans * Lead-based paint: known carcinogen, created severe, long- term health effects if ingested * PCBs: mixtures of synthetic organic chemicals. Significant ecological/human health issues, is a carcinogen, a neurotoxin, immune system suppressor, liver damage, and endocrine disruption
* The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for the regulation and enforcement of the TSCA * The EPA monitors industrial and household chemical use in order to safely regulate human chemical usage
