But why should we read this—or any other “global issue”—book?

“We shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that terrible abuses happen only on the other side of the world. … In truth, the abuses tend to be worse in Asia, but they certainly happen in America as well.” ~ Nicholas Kristof (2010)

Globally, that number is 30 million. ~Nicholas Kristof

Guess what? You have 171 days left of a free education. Make the most of it by learning about new things and ideas!

Looking ahead… Meet here tomorrow. Bring your student ID from last year to check out a book from the school library later in the hour. Tonight, look online about what global issues are out there and what non-fiction books about global issues exist. Are there any topics you are interested in and would like to know more about? Make a list and be ready to search for a book tomorrow. Friday will be a reading day (your nonfiction book). Your first summative will be based off of this book!

Name Speeches! Yes, everyone will get up here and share their speech. When a person is done, we will give him or her a “one-clap” speech clap. I will demonstrate. The goal is to learn everyone’s name. You should know the people in this class!

"Look men, we have a problem. Obviously we have a problem because some other men out there are doing horrible things to women. But we aren’t those men, so it’s not our problem. Our problem is that we think it’s not our problem." ~Jeff BridgesJeff Bridges "Only when men learn to recognize misogyny will we be able to rid the world of it. Not all men are part of the problem, but, yes, all men must be part of the solution." (from the NY Times article “Yes, All Men.”) Charles M. Blow
