Periodic Table Properties

Metals Color: Silvery-gray (except gold and copper) States of Matter: Solids at room temp. (except Cs, Fr, Ga, Hg – liquids) Melting Point: High (Many above 800˚C) Conductivity: GOOD conductors of heat and electricity Physical Properties: Lustrous (shiny) appearance, malleable, and ductile Reactivity: Usually react with acids Location on PT: Left of the stair step

Nonmetals Color: Varies widely States of Matter: Solids or gases (except Br) Melting Point: Low Conductivity: POOR conductors of heat and electricity Physical Properties: Dull (do not reflect light), brittle, powdery (not malleable) Reactivity: Usually no reaction with acids Location on PT: Right of the stair step

Metalloids Color: Tend to be silvery-gray to black States of Matter: Solids at room temp. Melting Point: Varies Conductivity: Not good conductors alone (semi-conductors) Physical Properties: Exhibit properties of both metals and nonmetals Reactivity: Varies Location on PT: Along (touching) the stair step

Alkali Metals Group #: Group 1 # of Valence e-: 1 Type of Element: Metal Solid, Liquid, or Gas: Solid Physical and Chemical Properties: Very reactive, low melting point, never found free in nature, form important compounds

Alkaline Earth Metals Group #: Group 2 # of Valence e-: 2 Type of Element: Metal Solid, Liquid, or Gas: Solid Physical and Chemical Properties: Reactive, but not as reactive as group 1, harder, denser, stronger than group 1, found in Earth’s crust

Transition Metals Group #: Groups 3-12 # of Valence e-: Varies Type of Element: Metal Solid, Liquid, or Gas: Solid (except Hg) Physical and Chemical Properties: Good conductors of heat and electricity, high luster when polished, less reactive, higher melting points, harder, denser than groups 1-2

Halogens Group #: Group 17 # of Valence e-: 7 Type of Element: Nonmetals Solid, Liquid, or Gas: Gas (except Br) Physical and Chemical Properties: Greek word (salt former), most reactive of nonmetals

Noble Gases Group #: Group 18 # of Valence e-: 8 (except He – 2) Type of Element: Nonmetals Solid, Liquid, or Gas: Gas Physical and Chemical Properties: Least reactive of all elements because of 8 (full) valence electrons, also called inert gases.
