Human Growth and Development Wauwatosa School District Curriculum Council Meeting 1-10-12
Committee Establishment A citizens' advisory committee shall be established, in accordance with Board Policy #9140 and 118.019(5), Wis. Stats., in order to ensure the effective participation of staff, parents and health-care professionals in the design and implementation of this program area. The committee shall review the curriculum at least every three (3) years.
Purpose of HGD Advisory Committee Review the current HGD policy, curriculum, and resources and make recommendations to the Health Writing Curriculum Team. Work is guided by: – Chapter 118.019(2) Wis. Stats – School Board Policy # 2414 – Human Growth and Development

District Belief (Outcome) Statements We Believe that Human Growth and Development curriculum… 1.Promotes healthy life skills, including respect for self and others, and encourages students to make healthy decisions.* 2.Promotes and encourages open and respectful communication between students and their parents, guardians and/or other trusted responsible adults. * 3.Provides current, medically accurate, developmentally appropriate and comprehensive information about human growth, development and sexuality.* 4.Provides a safe and respectful forum to address issues, questions, and concerns about personal sexual development and feelings.* 5.Develops an understanding that sexuality is an integral component of one’s physical, social and emotional development. * 6.Promotes the development of a positive personal standard of behavior.
Revised Parent Letters Recommendation 1: Standardization of parent letters to inform parents of HG & D content and delivery – DATE INSTRUCTION WILL BEGIN – SPECIFIC TOPICS TO BE COVERED – OPPORTUNITY (TIME, PLACE) TO REVIEW MATERIALS PRIOR TO INSTRUCTION – SPECIFICS ABOUT INSTRUCTION, I.E., SEPARATING BOYS & GIRLS – OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION THE TEACHER THINKS THE PARENTS MAY WANT. – RESOURCES/MATERIALS
Revised Parent Letters/Communication Recommendation : Creation of a dedicated web site to provide parent access to information and resources to support HG & D learning.
Rubrics for Evaluating Media & Materials Recommendations Recommendation 1: – Needs to meet the Wisconsin PK-12 Standards for Health Education, Wisconsin Act 134, Wauwatosa School Policy Recommendation 2: – Influenced by HG& D Resource Packet (4 th Ed, 2005) http://dpi.wi.gov/sspw/pdf/hgd4.pdf Recommendation 3: – Developmentally appropriate – Needs to reflect the literacy level of the student population – Culturally competent and free of bias (6.8 & 6.9 in HG& D Packet) – Multiple media needed to address the needs of diverse learners – Reference rubric 6.15 in HG & D packet
Rubrics for Evaluating Media & Materials Recommendations Recommendation 4: – Web Based Learning: (websites, blogs): – Web based health content should come from reputable sources (ie CDC, Medline Plus) – Web based content should be evaluated utilizing sites, such as HON (Health on the Net Foundation). – Reference rubric 6.17 in HG & D packet Recommendation 5: – Visual Media (DVDs, you-tube): – Must be accurate and relevant – Must be accessible at all time – Must be cost efficient – Reference rubric 6.16 in HG & D packet
Rubrics for Evaluating Media & Materials Recommendations Recommendation 6: – Written Material (Books, pamphlets): – Must be accurate and relevant – Must be cost efficient with material that cannot be found on web – Must be able to be adapted to meet learner needs – If a textbook is recommended, the text must be comprehensive in content and considered a highly regarded source of information – Reference information in 6.14 in HG & D
Curriculum Improvement Group Recommendations Recommendation 1: – Scope and sequence to include clear delineation of HG & D curriculum and designation of responsibility for instructional delivery. (See draft matrix in appendix) Recommendation 2: – Use of board policy language during work is important (see appendix) Recommendation 3: – Staff development plan to include ongoing HG & D training.
Curriculum Improvement Group - Elementary Level Recommendations Recommendation 4: Elementary Level Additional comments: – Second Step covers decision-making process in grades K-5 Dr. Diehr’s recommendations: – important to be proactive, teach information before the child needs it – second grade should cover proper names for private body parts – Programs to consider: Drug Defense, nutrition activities through Children’s Hospital, peers with impact See scope and sequence matrix
