2 BACKGROUND No Smoking Policy (2007) Smoking not allowed anywhere in buildings, entrances, doorways, car parks and grounds Applies to all staff, patients and visitors Staff not allowed to smoke whilst on duty and in uniform or identifiable as a staff member Removal of smoking shelters

12 ISSUES Verbal abuse “Many people, when informed about the no smoking policy at the hospital are happy to move on or extinguish their cigarette and understand the reasons behind the policy” ”During my 4 months as a Smoking Warden at Glasgow Royal Infirmary only around 5% of the people who visit or attend the hospital direct any verbal abuse to us whilst carrying out our duties”

13 ISSUES No power Support from staff Wardens are smokers E-cigarettes Inconsistency across sites Rationale for policy and smokefree grounds

14 RESULTS SO FAR Positive feedback from site managers - “There has been an improvement in smokers congregating outside entrances. As the patients and visitors change on a regular basis smoking at entrances will revert to previous levels if not policed” “Campaign has worked noticeably where we have the hatching and posters on the doors. Wardens have helped but the two in tandem have produced the best results”

15 RESULTS SO FAR Reduction in complaints received about smoking June 2013 – Feb complaints with 5 for smoking – 8.77% of all complaints June 2012 – Feb complaints with 17 for smoking – 24.2% of all complaints

16 RESULTS SO FAR Increase in NRT used within hospitals July 2013 – 10,135 July 2012 – 6,417 Reduction in smoking at main entrances (counting smokers)
