2 The animal is also called capivara in Portuguese, and carpincho, chigüiro or chigüire in Spanish. The name originally derives from the Guarani word kapiÿva, meaning roughly "master of the grasses". 4 Capybaras can be found in Central and Southern America in habitats ranging from savannah to rain forest. They do have some requirements however. First and foremost a capybara's habitat must include a constant source of standing water. A pond, river, or lake is an absolute necessity for any capybara. This water is used for shelter Country: Panama, Columbia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, French Guyana, Uruguay, Peru, Paraguay.
