4 Staff Profile Ethnicity of Staff – – 22 Maori – 16 Pakeha – 6 Pacific island – 2 Indian – 2 French Age Profile – 25% under 25 years old 8 Females Many struggled in the school system and left with almost no formal qualifications – they left to get a job as early as possible

5 The Training Process Initial training is focused on Health and Safety Then Level 2 is our minimum requirement – often their first taste ofNational Certificates – We present certificates at Monthly BBQ for each unit passed ( cheer them all on – recognise success on the journey – not just at the end) This is a taste – then they are encouraged to move on…. – Level 3, 4 or more…. – Apprenticeships etc

6 Company Culture We expect staff to participate and therefore support them through their training Peer Group Pressure – everybody else is in training A Trainer/Assessor is provided The company cares and acknowledges success Improvement is part of our culture

7 The Trainer/Assessor A huge part of our success is due to the personality, experience and skills of our trainer/assessor Willie is Maori and relates well to all the students He has experience – he worked his way up through the industry He speaks their language and understands their issues He is trusted

9 Successes 134 Unit standards passed July 2013 – August 2014 Northpine has been a finalist in The FITEC National training awards 3 times for “Training Company of the Year – Wood Manufacturing” Northpine won the FITEC “Outstanding Business Performance through Training” award in 2013 Northpine was a finalist in the Northland Business awards “Excellence in Business - Large Business” 2012, 2013, 2014 Northpine won the “Workplace Safety” award and the “Judges Commendation” award in 2013 Northpine was a finalist in the “Workplace Safety” award 2014

July – HEALTH AND SAFETY – Cancer Society – Prostrate and skin cancer as well as smoking Heart Foundation – Healthy eating H&S equipment – how to use it and the best type to use for the job done. Family Violence – Enough is Enough: presented by the family of a victim of family violence Asthma Society SEPTEMBER: THE WORLD ECONOMY – the influence it has on the country and the industry as a whole. Rodney Dickens an economist, Tony Collins CEO NZ Chamber of Commerce Northland. DECEMBER – CAREERS & CAREER PATHWAYS It makes them think about life outside work. The Family Violence presentation was particularly impactful
