2 The agri sector Sub – Saharan Africa © Phatisa 2014 EMPEA - Data as of 30 September Published 29 October  Global food production must increase 70% by  Africa’s food import bill at over US$ 40 billion p.a.  Africa has about 12% of the world’s arable land - 80% of it is uncultivated, only 7% is irrigated (compared to 40% in Asia).  Low maize yields at 1.2 tonnes per hectare versus 3 tonnes in rest of emerging markets.  Fertiliser consumption only 13 kg per hectare versus 190 kg in East Asia & Pacific.  Africa is ripe for a green revolution.
