2 HAWTHORNE’S LIFE… Born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts The day before Ohio legislature passed its first law restricting free black movements Died in 1864 Quiet, shy man with a passionate love for his older neighbor - Sophia Peabody Originally his last name was Hathorne Later added the “w” to hide his relation with his mother - Elizabeth Clarke Hathorne

3 Family of professional law officials Extremely difficult for Nathaniel When everyone found out about his love of writing they were utterly disappointed This disappointment later turns into massive success Graduated from Bowden College In the 1840’s-1850’s, his career of writing blossomed HAWTHORNE’S LIFE…

4 Began writing anonymously in magazines and gift books Later started creating his own short stories and novels “Twice Told Tales” “Mosses From an Old Manse” “Moby Dick” “The Scarlet Letter” “Grandfather’s Chair” Writing style was spectacular Demonstrated the inherent evil and sin of humanity HAWTHORNE’S LIFE…
