Three things we can learn from Joseph’s life about successful discipleship
Aversity Genesis 37:2 2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.

Leah Simeon Genesis 29:33 Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has therefore given me this son also. Levi Genesis 29:34 Now this time my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Judah Genesis 29:35 This time I will praise the LORD. Conflict in being unloved
The seeds of discord Genesis 37:3 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.
Surrounded by hate Genesis 37:4 4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. I would not have told the dream in this situation
Reception of a Dream Genesis 37:5-8 5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, "Hear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf." 8 His brothers said to him, "Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?" So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words. The youngest chosen Hate made them see the bowing and not the purpose
The place of dreams Abimelech My recurring dream
Human dreams Personal ambition Riches Genesis 28:15 15 "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."
Dreams to Joseph God revealing Himself to Him Genesis 40:8 8 They said to him, "We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them." And Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me."
Visions laid in the hearts of His people Sustain Guide Motivate Focus Acts 2:17 17 "'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; Our Circumstances Our Gifts
Visions captivate-energise NAS Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. For me to live is Christ to die is gain Apostle to the Gentile
Dreams meet reality Family hated him even more His own father did not completely believe him
Genesis 37: Then he dreamed another dream and told it to his brothers and said, "Behold, I have dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun, the moon, and eleven stars were bowing down to me." 10 But when he told it to his father and to his brothers, his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves to the ground before you
11 And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.
Genesis 39:1-23 ESV Now Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, had bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.
Dreams meet reality Betrayed –almost murdered by own brothers Sold as a slave Exiled to foreign land Away from Promised Land...away from God
To dream the impossible dream To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear the unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not go To write the unwritable wrong To be better by far than you are To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion
This is my quest, to follow that star No matter how hopeless, No matter how far To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march into hell For a heavenly cause And I know if I’ll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will be peaceful and calm When I’m laid to my rest
And the world would be better for this That one man scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star
God holds on to Joseph Genesis 39:2-5 2 The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, and he was in the house of his Egyptian master So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. Faithful Love
Behind the scenes 5 From the time that he made him overseer in his house and over all that he had the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had, in house and field.
Genesis 39:6-7 Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"
Genesis 39:8 But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Behold, because of me my master has no concern about anything in the house, and he has put everything that he has in my charge. 9 He is not greater in this house than I am, nor has he kept back anything from me except yourself, because you are his wife Genesis 39:10 10 As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.
Aware of God’s presence and His expectations on his life despite being far away from the promised land Despite being apparently being let down by God
Obediance Genesis 39:12 12 She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
God does not call us to amazing resilience or fight but simple.. If you are struggling in yr walk or discouraged iun service just be obedient
Genesis 3 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Portiphar Genesis 39:6 6 So he left all that he had in Joseph's charge, and because of him he had no concern about anything but the food he ate Obedience is transformative
Jailor Genesis 39: And the keeper of the prison put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever was done there, he was the one who did it. 23 The keeper of the prison paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph's charge,

God like Qualities Integrity Honesty Diligence Competence
Titus 2: Slaves are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
Adorn- make beautiful or attractive, decorate… Accentuate the beauty
Adorn- make beautiful or attractive, decorate Genesis 39:3 3 His master saw that the LORD was with him
Family pain Deep emotional hurt
Genesis 43: And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!" 30 Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there.
Gen 45:2 And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. 3 And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?".
Incredible forgiveness Genuine Love Untouched by bitterness
Reason why he was able to overcome bitterness and love them Genesis 45:4-5 4 So Joseph said to his brothers, "Come near to me, please." And they came near. And he said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.
He understood the big picture Genesis 45:7-8 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
Aware that they are accountable to God Genesis 50: Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." 19 But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? He does not take it personally As if it is for him to judge and repay we get bitter if we take it personally..pt
He did not ignore the wrong Genesis 50: "As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. 21 "So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Roadblocks to successful discipleship Frustration, paralysis, bitterness cynicism unforgiveness
Apostle Paul 2 Timothy 4:10 10 For Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. 2 Timothy 4:14 14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.
Seeing God’s Perspective 2 Timothy 4: At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear
1. We need to be captured by God’s vision for us 2. We need to hold on to our visions in the face of the contrary 3. We need to cultivate the Ability to see things from God’s perspective
How tedious and tasteless the hours when Jesus no longer I see. Sweet prospects, sweet birds and sweet flowers Have all lost their sweetness to me The midsummer sun shines but dim, the fields strive in vain to look gay John Newton
But when I am happy in Him December’s as pleasant as May
