The Necessity of a Word-Filled Life

Choice Consumers or Junk-Filled Junkies Christians should produce great art and great stories, but we also have the responsibility to cultivate our taste so we prefer great art and great stories to the trivial, the senselessly violent, and the vulgar. - John Stonestreet Breakpoint, January 10, 2013 What is playing on the theatre of your mind? Does it honor the one who’s called you Or just reflect the signs of the times?

Choice Consumers or Junk-Filled Junkies In his essay “Weight of Glory,” C. S. Lewis wrote: “We are half-hearted creatures... like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” Stonestreet paraphrases Lewis as follows: "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with reality TV, cheesy romance novels, and decorating our homes with trinkets—when we could watch great films, read great books, old and new, that accurately describe the human condition and cause us to examine our lives; and feast our eyes on works of art that point to a greater beauty and Truth."

Choice Consumers or Junk-Filled Junkies 6 “You alone are the L ORD. You made the skies and the heavens and all the stars. You made the earth and the seas and everything in them. You preserve them all, and the angels of heaven worship you. - Nehemiah 9:6 Gaining Perspective: The L ORD is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. - Deuteronomy 4:39

Gaining Perspective (cont’d) Today’s Old Testament and New Testament Readings - The Centrality of Scripture, It’s Truth, Our Denial 16 “But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands. 17 They refused to obey and did not remember the miracles you had done for them. Instead, they became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to their slavery in Egypt! But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them, 18 even when they made an idol shaped like a calf and said, ‘This is your god who brought you out of Egypt!’ They committed terrible blasphemies. 19 “But in your great mercy you did not abandon them to die in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud still led them forward by day, and the pillar of fire showed them the way through the night. 20 You sent your good Spirit to instruct them, and you did not stop giving them manna from heaven or water for their thirst. 21 For forty years you sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell! -Nehemiah 9:16-21

Gaining Perspective (cont’d) Today’s Old Testament and New Testament Readings - The Centrality of Scripture, It’s Truth, Our Denial 2 God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. 3 The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, 4 and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord. – Romans 1: For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile. 17 This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” –Romans 1:16,17 18 But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness. - Romans 1:18 24 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the truth about God for a lie. - Romans 1:24-25

“Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of liberty so intimately in their minds, that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other.” - Alexis de Tocqueville -The National Cathedral will begin conducting Homosexual/Lesbian weddings in Planned Parenthood performed a record number of abortions in 2012 and received a record amount of Federal Funding (your Taxpayer $’s) - Under the HHS mandate, all businesses (ie, Hobby Lobby) must provide coverage for sterilization and abortifacients, such as Plan B, the “morning-after pill,” and Ella, the so-called “week after pill.” And of course, they must provide contraceptives. That is not Today’s USA!!

The Necessity of a Word-Filled Life! 28 “But as soon as they were at peace, your people again committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them many times! 29 You warned them to return to your Law, but they became proud and obstinate and disobeyed your commands. They did not follow your regulations, by which people will find life if only they obey. They stubbornly turned their backs on you and refused to listen. 30 In your love, you were patient with them for many years. You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets. But still they would not listen! So once again you allowed the peoples of the land to conquer them. 31 But in your great mercy, you did not destroy them completely or abandon them forever. What a gracious and merciful God you are!” -Nehemiah 9:28-31

The Necessity of a Word-Filled Life! 36 “So now today we are slaves in the land of plenty that you gave our ancestors for their enjoyment! We are slaves here in this good land. 37 The lush produce of this land piles up in the hands of the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins. They have power over us and our livestock. We serve them at their pleasure, and we are in great misery.” -Nehemiah 9: The People Agree to Obey 38 The people responded, “In view of all this, we are making a solemn promise and putting it in writing. On this sealed document are the names of our leaders and Levites and priests.” 10 1 The document was ratified and sealed…Ne 9:38-10:1 All the people agreed to obey and follow God’s Word.

Where Is Our Allegiance, Our Obedience? 28 For you are not a true Jew (Christian) just because you were born of Jewish (Christian) parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew (Christian) is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God’s Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people. – Romans 2:28-29 History does tend to repeat itself. Man does tend to forget, especially when it involves GOD! The Necessity of a Word-Filled Life! Who will we stand with? What will we stand for?

BENEDICTION May the peace of God which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; and may the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be yours now and forever. Amen
