Advent 2013

The First week of Advent Week Commencing 2 nd December 2013 Be Prepared

The Word was the true light that enlightens all people. John 1:9 2 nd December 2013

Brilliant God of light, as we start these days of Advent, help us to get ready: not just with presents and cards and parties and celebrations, but also in our mind and in our heart. You came to earth bringing light to our darkness help us to share this light today. Amen.

He is like a shepherd feeding his flock, gathering lambs in his arms. Isaiah 40:11 3 rd December 2013

Jesus the Good Shepherd, you gently care for us and watch over us, showing us a great example of love and compassion. Help the flock of our school today, especially those who might feel sad or troubled. Teach us to reach out to them with kindness. Amen.

God, you are our Father. We’re the clay and you’re our potter: all of us are what you made us. Isaiah 64:8 4 th December 2013r

Thank you, God, for the gift of one another. With our rough edges and our smooth, you create us with such imagination and creativity. We pray for humility today: the humility to see our own sense of value and worth. Amen.

Time’s coming when I’ll establish... a ruler who knows how to rule justly. He’ll make sure of justice and keep people united. This is the name they’ll give him: ‘God-who-puts- everything-right.’ Jeremiah 23:5-6 5 th December 2013

Give us a sense of balance, God. Too often our world is tipped up on its side – favouring the rich and the wealthy, and hurting the poor and the needy. This isn’t how you meant it to be! You longed for equality and fairness, for a just world. Help the things we do and say today to reflect this sense of balance. Teach us kindness and understanding, acceptance and friendship. Help the justice we share here in college spread widely through our world. Amen.

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God-is-with-us’. Matthew 1:22-23 6 th December 2013

We thank you Lord, for the generous acceptance of Mary, and for her example of real faith and trust. Through her witness, deepen our own belief in you. Help us to be open before you, and to trust in your love for us. Amen.

The Second week of Advent Week Commencing 9 th December 2013 Change your ways

Trust in the Lord for ever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal. Isaiah 26:4 9 th December 2013

Eternal rock of strength, we pray to you, Lord, for those who suffer in mind, in body, in heart or in spirit. Be strong for them, generous God, and give them courage. Ease whatever problems they might have and help them to look to a brighter future. Amen.

That day it will be said: See, this is our God in whom we hoped for salvation; the Lord is the one in whom we hoped. Isaiah 25:9 10 th December 2013

In Mary’s saying ‘Yes’ to God: we find our hope. In the angels’ song of ‘Glory to God’: we find our hope. In the shepherd’s rush to see their King: we find our hope. In the Magi’s following of the star: we find our hope. In a child in a stable in Bethlehem, we find our hope. In one another as we follow Jesus: we live in hope.

Look, there is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. John 1:29 11th December 2013

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us. Let this mercy overflow today and change our hearts. We sometimes hold grudges or stubbornly refuse to forgive, but this only makes things worse. Instead, Lord, give us the grace we need to be forgiving. Help this day to be one of healing, of putting things right, and making peace. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us.

You, Lord, yourself are our Father, Our Redeemer is your ancient name. Isaiah 63:16 12th December 2013

Christ our Redeemer, you know us through and our every thought, word and You know the places where we you know the places where we mess up, yet still you love us! We ask you, Lord, to bless us today with the ability to say sorry. As we seek forgiveness, help us to be forgiving too. Amen.

Sing and shout for joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 12:6 13 th December 2013

In the things we say, remind us, Lord, we are your voice in the world. In the friendship we share, encourage us, Lord, we are your friends in the world. In the way we act, inspire us, Lord, to be your love in the world. And in the way we live, bless us, O Lord, for we are your presence in the world.

The Third week of Advent Week Commencing 16 th December 2013 Are we nearly there yet?

The Lord Almighty is his name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. Isaiah 54:5 16 th December 2013
