7 PROCEDURE Survey/Observation of primary III classes in 10 schools Observation of strategies of teaching reading Assessment of books being used Assessment of pupils practice

9 FINDINGS Pupils inability to read efficiently General lack of reading materials Problem of correct identification and pronunciation of phonemes Lack of comprehension/loss of interest in reading due to poor performance Low achievement in class work

11 CONSEQUENCE Negative attitude to reading Low performance in reading and other subjects (Falayajo, 1996) Loss of interest in book and book materials General lack of interest in reading Low motivation to reading Lack of love books

13 STRATEGIES OF PROMOTING EFFECTIVE READING Create access to book and book materials Promote literacy activities within and outside the school Help pupils to learn reading by teaching letters/sound relationship (Hoffman et al 1964)

15 Teach phoneme awareness (Liberman and Liberman 1992) Create libraries in schools and stock them with good story books Make access to such books open to pupils Introduce and sustain literature circles (Daniel 1994) Read aloud from a wide variety of books

17 Teach consonant discriminations and allow students to practice them Give motivational talks on regular basis Create good classroom instruction coupled with out-door activity Engage teacher librarians

19 Introduce shared reading between/among pupils on regular basis Introduce how to teach reading in curriculum of teacher education Embark on campaigns on the importance of reading on regular basis across schools

21 APPEAL Since books are very important to promote reading, we would like to appeal for book donation for elementary schools in our country. We would also like to appeal for support in our effort at promoting reading through campaigns.
