Christianity in The Matrix Madison Barnett
Neo Savior figure Thomas Anderson - son of man (Greek) Unconventional means of “birth” Resurrection
Movie Clip- Resurrection He Is The One
Morpheus God like figure- from Neo’s perspective Provides means for the savior of mankind to exist Neo looks to Morpheus for guidance
Trinity / The Number 3 Most obvious manifestation of the spiritually significant number 3. Completes the triumvirate along with Neo and Morpheus The 3 characters could be symbolic for the Christian Holy Trinity.
Forbidden Fruit Red Pill / Blue Pill scene is analogous to the Adam and Eve story in the Bible By taking the red pill, Neo is subjected to a new knowledge that could not have previously been felt, like Eve. Interesting contrast- Red pill creates savior, Fruit creates necessity for savior.
Nebuchadnezzar Pays homage to King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon, or Nebuchadnezzar the Great. Has fantastic dream of riches Linked to Morpheus’ fantastic dream- that Neo can end the machine’s enslavement of humanity.
Bible Reference on Board A plaque on the Nebuchadnezzer reads Mark III No. 11. Chapter 3, verse 11 of the Gospel according the Mark says “And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him and cried, saying, ‘Thou art the Son of God!’” Morpheus’ foresight
Zion Reversal of the Biblical portrayal From “City on a Hill” to a city miles underground.
Conclusion/Questions? The Matrix is an extremely in depth effort by the Wachowski brothers with many other cultural references. References to Alice In Wonderland, hacker culture, historical philosophy, and much more. I chose to deal with Christianity its overall significance within the realm of American culture and the vast amount of connections that appear in the movie. Any questions?
