Henderson 5/25/08 Lesson # 21 2 Key Words: citizen – a native or naturalized member of a state or nation who owes allegiance to its government and is entitled to its protection citizenship – the state of being vested with the rights, privileges, and duties of a citizen commonwealth – the people of a state or nation Heavenly Citizens

Henderson 5/25/08 Lesson # 21 4 Phil. 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; citizenship - politeuma (noun) - signifies "the condition, or life of a citizen, citizenship;" In the NT, the state itself, community, commonwealth, used metaphorically of Christians in reference to their spiritual community (Zodhiates) For the commonwealth of which we are citizens (Wuest) But we are citizens of the state (commonwealth, homeland) (Amp)

Henderson 5/25/08 Lesson # 21 5 Phil. 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; normal Greek word for is – eimi – verb of status quo, state in which something continually exists examples see 1John 1:5 and 1 John 4:15 but the Greek for is in this verse – hyparcho – “to be in existence”, involving an "existence" or condition both previous to the circumstances mentioned and continuing after it (Vine) see Phil 2:6
