O Christian, Haste CW #570 Verses 1-4 Text: Mary A. Thomson, 1834-1923 Setting: REDEMPTION Tune: Bruce R. Backer, b. 1929

Verse 1: O Christians, haste, your mission high fulfilling, To tell to all the world that God is light, That he who made all nations is not willing One soul should perish, lost in shades of night.

Refrain: Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace, Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

Verse 2: Behold how many thousands still are lying Bound in the dreary prison- house of sin With none to tell them of the Savior's dying Or of the life he died for them to win.

Refrain: Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace, Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

Verse 3: Proclaim to ev'ry people, tongue, and nation That God, in whom they live and move, is love; Tell how he stooped to save his lost creation And died on earth that they might live above.

Refrain: Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace, Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

Verse 4: Send heralds forth to bear the message glorious; Give of your wealth to speed them on their way; Pour out your soul for them in prayer victorious; O Christians, haste to bring the brighter day!

Refrain: Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace, Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release.

Opening Verses Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen.

Opening Verses Pastor: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. All: Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

Opening Verses Pastor: Darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the people, for every inclination of the thoughts of the heart is only evil all the time. All: And the soul that sins shall die.

Opening Verses Pastor: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. All: On those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Opening Verses Pastor: The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. All: He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Opening Verses Pastor: Now in Christ Jesus we who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. He came and preached peace to us who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Opening Verses All: For we are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of us who were baptized into Christ have clothed ourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.

Opening Verses Pastor: He was slain, and with his blood he purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. All: He made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and we will reign on the earth.

Opening Verses Pastor: I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Opening Verses Pastor: There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. All: In Christ we are built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Opening Verses Pastor: You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;

Opening Verses Pastor: once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. All: We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.

Verse 1: I hear the Savior calling! The gospel comes to me. My eyes once closed in blindness, Are opened now to see. That I myself was helpless To live eternally, But, dying, Christ did save me, And now he calls for me!

Verse 2: I hear the Savior calling! He leads a soul to me. A soul in bitter anguish, One needing to be free. The gift I have to offer Is Christ, my Lord’s decree That all have been forgiven- My Savior calls for me!

Verse 3: I hear the Savior calling! He gives this charge to me: To serve the best I’m able, What-e’er the call may be. Thus hand in hand with others Who share the gospel key We spread the gospel tidings - My Savior calls for me!

Verse 4: I hear the Savior calling! He changes hearts for me. From door to door I witness To share my Savior’s plea. Yet nothing can be added, No word on bended knee, Beyond the simple gospel- My Savior calls for me!

Verse 5: I hear the Savior calling! His call has urgency! Each moment souls are dying; Soon comes eternity. And so, my precious Savior, This is my humble plea: Prepare me for my mission For you are calling me!

In thankfulness for our salvation, we support God’s work with our offerings.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Loving God, we thank you for all the blessings you have showered on us. You sent your Son, our Lord Jesus, to live and die in our place that you could find cause to declare us forgiven and free from sin forever.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: In the company of the Church you joined us to Jesus in Holy Baptism, and by Word and meal your Spirit strengthens our faith and keeps us safe for eternal life. All: Keep our faith in Christ strong, O Lord. Lead us to love your Word and sacraments.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: In his great love for us, your Son commissioned us and all his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, to baptize and teach everything that he commanded. What an honor we have! What a privilege!

Prayer of the Church All: Thank you for calling us to share the gospel of Jesus with people nearby and far away.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: We confess, O Lord, that we have not always taken your Son’s command seriously and personally. We have allowed other duties and pleasures to take priority over making disciples. We have brushed off the Savior’s commission and relied on others to do our work.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Forgive all our sins, Lord, and especially the sin of failing to hear and heed your Son’s command. All: Give us strength to stand firm against temptation and power to live as your disciples.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: We are grateful that you have raised up men and women who are willing to help us carry out the Savior’s commission. We thank you for those in our congregation who proclaim the gospel on our behalf.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: We praise you for filling young men and women with the courage and enthusiasm to spend years in training and then go around the globe in our place. All: Grant success to our work, O Lord, and lead many to believe in the Savior’s forgiveness.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Keep in your care, O Lord, all those who are sick and suffering distress. Comfort those who feel unloved, forgive those bowed down with guilt, open the eyes of those nearing death to see the gates of heaven.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: According to your will prosper our economy once again that we may continue to bring our best offerings for the ministry of the gospel. (Special prayers & intercessions may be offered)

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Keep in your care our dear synod and all with whom we share a common allegiance to your Word. Keep your Word pure among us, give us purpose as we proclaim the gospel in Southeast Asia and across the world, and free us from whatever burdens weigh us down and limit our work.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Fire us with the power of your Spirit, unite us in love, and lead us to long for that day when we will share with all the saints and angels the glory that shines in the throne room of the Lamb. All: Amen.

Lord’s Prayer All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.
