1 Accelerator based Neutrino program around the world 1. Europe: Neutrino platform at CERN ESS second maximum? 2. Japan: T2K and HyperK status 3. USA: LBNF status 4. Opportunities for MIND detectors

2 In Europe: -- Neutrino platform has been approved in MTP and CERN council see latest: M. Nessi in International Meeting for Large Neutrino Infrastructures -- for now «hadron» (e/mu/pi/K/p) test beam to EHN1 WA ICARUS refurbishment and perhaps 150 Ton module -- NESSIE Preparation for aircore magnet prototype WA LAGUNA/LBNO double phase prototype infrastructure usable for other tests such as LBNE Big MIND not encouraged by SPSC. Baby MIND +... in preparation WA106 ‘Argoncube /microboone -- Design of short baseline beam -- possible implementation of nuSTORM - - mostly for very precise cross-section measurement Also (not clear how far this will go) ESS (=~ SPL) to ‘MEMPHYS’ at double maximum in Sweden Design study to EU (see Ekelof, same meeting)

3 In th US: P5 report: -- seeks to establish FERMILAB as ‘Global’ Neutrino-lab -- LBNE sould be re-established as LBNF including international collaborators in the design -- meanwhile proton complex to be upgraded (PIP-II) to 1.2 MW (long term 2 MW) neutrino summit took place July 2014 see https://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=8689https://indico.fnal.gov/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=8689 Presence of HyperK people as well as LBNO pleople, but not all LBNE etc... Agreed that community wants 1. a (Mton) large water Cherenckov experiment (CPV, proton decay, Supernovae, etc.) 2. a ( kton) Larg experiment for more detailed studies of the above.  complementarity of HyperK/Japan and LBNF /USA Agreed that baseline, beam design and even detector technology will be reconsidered for US project. (possibility of water Cherenkov at second osc. max, or Larg single phase vs double phase)

4 LBNF Working groups to be formed : in these themes, the working groups that we have defined are: Facility configuration Energy and baseline Detector optimisation Near detector programme Facility implementation Far site implementation Near site implementation Beamline implementation Supporting programme Systematics Requirements for test beams Programme of ancillary measurement Next meeting in october -november there will be an IIEB (international Interim Executive board) including members of LBNE and LBNO + a few others.

5 In Japan -- meeting of HyperK Working group in Vancouver see in particular talks by Nakaya (for general situation) and Rayner for MIND usage -- HYPERK among 27 top priority projects in Japan -- not ready to go yet (only 10 were selected) -- needed : -- better defined collaboration -- better assignment of responsibilities in international project. -- meanwhile will continue R&D (which is funded) on -excavation, photosensors and will aim to converge to technically define with clear responsibilities the near detector -- note that meeting had a whole session on complementarity with LBNF.

6 see timelines for HyperK and LBNE My expectation is that, pending the fact that the ILC is not completely dead yet -- door will be left open for 2-3 more years, for the case where some new physics found at LHC requires ILC HyperK (or at least half of it) will be running already in the middle of the 2020’s thus about 5 years before a US project of similar sensitivity See next page the Swiss policy as agreed with Ereditato and Rubbia.

7 Complementarity -1- HyperK is the natural continuation to T2K We have invested in NA61, and in the near detectors of T2K It is the most sensitive proposal for the observation of CP violation in neutrino oscillations and for a large part of underground physics (proton decay, atmospheric, solar and supernovae neutrinos).... and the most straight-forward technology -2- it is not complete however and there is a physics case for a complementary experiment that would determine unambiguously the value of  CP and the mass hierarchy, complete the observations of oscillations involving tau leptons and matter effects  {LBNO; LBNE}. This requires a more sensitive technology (Liq. Argon), in need of R&D and experience (and probably a longer time scale) The path is not unique and includes focused R&D (WA105) and application + experience on running experiments (microboone)

9 An interesting development In T2K we have been asked to consider the implementation of the AIDA ‘baby-MIND’ as muon catcher (and sign-selector) for the WAGASCI experiment measurement of neutrino and antineutirno cross-sections in water I think this is very intresting as it will use our R&D prototype in a real experiment and constitutes a preamble for the near detector of HyperK
