Changes to the MTCT & Discussion of the Impacts on Submission Jill Marsteller PhD, MPP Christine George, RN, MS Kelly Gardner, MA On the CUSP: Stop BSI November 9th, 2010
Learning Objectives The goals of this presentation are: To review what the MTCT is & how it can propel units towards success with CUSP activities. To learn about major barriers to completion that supported the need to update the tool. To understand the changes to the MTCT & the reason behind those changes. To present ‘from-the-field’ success stories with MTCT.
What is the MTCT? Monthly Team Check-Up Tool Assessment completed monthly to evaluate how a unit-team is implementing CUSP and CLABSI activities
What is the MTCT Continued Principal objective of the MTCT is to serve as a monthly benchmark to guide unit teams towards continued progress and success with CUSP & CLABSI activities
Why was it Updated? The reason for updating the tool was to reinforce our belief in its value for participants through addressing concerns unit teams had regarding ease of completion
Ways you can use the MTCT Check in with your team ID teamwork & communication concerns & corrective action Track progress on CUSP steps and CLABSI reduction Track progress on project roll-out Report your activity upward to management
Other ways the MTCT is useful State Leads and National Faculty use MTCT data: to respond to educational needs of teams as a tool to assess project development needs Society and science can learn from the elements of team context that influence performance
Barriers to Completion Time consuming Tool too long No time to coordinate staff to compile data Repetitious Same questions asked monthly regardless that answers had not changed Content was overlapping
Barriers to Completion Continued Questions were confusing in places Response options unclear User unsure what exactly the question was asking Value of tool unclear How is this supposed to help my unit? On the CUSP urban legend: the National Project Team uses the data from MTCT to “keep tabs” on units to see if they are effectively implementing CUSP and CLABSI activities…
Barriers to Completion …NOT TRUE! The National Project Team – at this point – uses the data from the MTCT to identify educational needs for units and to help motivate and support units.
Change – Eliminate Repetition 11 “Why do I have to answer the same questions month after month when the answers haven’t changed?” If the answer changed from last month, simply check the box and the question will be reactivated.
No more checking which activities your team engaged in each month. Questions about CUSP activities have been put together in sections Before After Change – Eliminate Overlapping Content
Change – Clarification of Confusing Questions 13 FAQ: Do I answer this question from the beginning of the project or since last month? A: “Since you began participating in the project” Before After
Change – Added Response Options to Reduce Confusion 14 Tell us why these questions don’t apply this month. “How do I answer these questions if we didn’t insert any lines on my unit this month?”
From the Field: Success Stories with the MTCT
Memorial Hospital West Pembroke Pines, FL 100% MTCT submission rate since intervention date in September, 2009!
Memorial Hospital West Pembroke Pines, FL Initial Reaction to MTCT Completing tool is cumbersome due to having to enter duplicate information Current Impression Increased familiarity with system and communication with team members Barriers to Completion Compiling information from team members. Overcoming Barriers to Completion Adding internal meeting to review data collection efforts MTCT as a Guide for Your Team Share information house wide including viewing the Science of Safety video and CUSP Presentations
Concord Hospital Concord, NH 100% MTCT submission rate since intervention date in September, 2009!
Concord Hospital Concord, NH Initial Reaction to MTCT Helped team stay on track and easy to complete Current Impression More proficient with workflow Barriers to Completion Remembering to complete it monthly MTCT as a Guide for Your Team? Consistent reminder to include video in employee orientation.
Crozer Chester Medical Center Upland, PA Used MTCT data to identify & correct obstacles with Executive Champion!
Crozer Chester Medical Center Upland, PA Initial Reaction to MTCT Curious about its utility Current Impression Less tedious as it became routine Barriers to Completion Meeting with team members to compile data Overcoming Barriers Entered as recurring reminder in calendar; asked team for input as often as possible; MTCT as a Guide for Your Team? Was able to identify issues with our Executive Champion and address his participation.
Sharon Muscatell Pennsylvania State Lead Initial Reaction to the MTCT Difficulty seeing value for unit teams and seemed cumbersome Current Impression Believes in the value of the instrument Example of using the MTCT as a State Lead Travelled to units to share success stories to encourage submission and addressing barriers to completion
