Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God
DEFINITION: 1.This asserts that the saving grace of God is effectually applied to those whom He has determined to save [that is the elect] and overcomes their resistance to obeying the call of the gospel bringing them to saving faith. This means that when God in His sovereignty purposes to save someone, that individual will be saved.
DEFINITION: 2. The doctrine holds that this purposeful influence of God’s Holy Spirit cannot be resisted, but that the Holy Spirit, “graciously causes the elect sinner to cooperate, to believe, to repent, to come freely and willingly to Christ.”
CAUTION: This is not to deny the fact that the Spirit’s outward call [through the proclamation of the gospel] can be, and often is, rejected by sinners, rather, it’s that inward call that cannot be rejected.
NOTE: In fact, every saved person can testify how, at some point in life, they felt, “overwhelmingly compelled to believe in Christ, as if they ‘had no choice but to follow Him.” That is what is meant by the effectual calling of God.
FALSE ASSUMPTIONS CORRECTED 1. This does not mean that every influence of the Holy Spirit can be resisted, but that the Holy Spirit can overcome all resistance and make His influence irresistable. 2. To say that all grace is irresistable is to deny the plain facts of observation and experience as also of Scripture teaching.
FALSE ASSUMPTIONS-CONT’D 3. When we speak of irresistible grace, therefore it is not to assert that all grace is irresistible, not is it to deny the numberless respects in which grace is resisted and resisted to the culmination of resistance to everlasting doom. The emnity of the human heart is most virulent at the point of the supreme revelation of God’s glory through the exegete of God and the embodiment of grace- Jesus Christ.
FALSE ASSUMPTIONS-CONT’D 4. Based upon the false assumption that irresistible grace means that grace cannot be resisted in order to be conformed to this doctrine, modern evangelism says one thing that man can do is to exercise his own liberty to believe in Christ for salvation so as to set the forces of salvation in operation.
FALSE ASSUMPTIONS-CONT’D That even God can do nothing towards this end until there is this crucial decision on man’s own part. However, this totally fails to reckon on the total human depravity which is the strength of resistance intrinsic in this human nature.
EXAMPLES OF RESISTING THE HOLY SPIRIT 1. Acts 7:51: “Ye stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit as your fathers did.” 2. Paul speaks of grieving and quenching the Holy Spirit in Eph 4:30 and I Thess 5:19. 3. The whole history of Israel in the Old Testament is one of protracted resistance as Matt 21:33-45 and Romans 10:21 shows.
EFFICACIOUS GRACE OVERCOMES RESISTANCE 1. God is sovereign and can overcome resistance if He wills. 2. Dan 4:35, “He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand.” 3. Ps 115:3, “Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.”
EFFICACIOUS GRACE OVERCOMES RESISTANCE-NOTE! 4. This sovereignty is not just a capricious exercise of His sovereign will, but it is with a purpose, which, when exercised to its culmination or conclusion will have no criticism, even from His enemies and will redound to the glory of God. Rom 3:19-20, 2 Cor 5:19, Ph 2:6-11.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE 1. Arminians cite Acts 16:14-Lydia was a worshipper of God BEFORE she heard Paul and God opened her heart. a.God’s electing grace starts even before one even responds. b.Example Rom 9:10-16: Jacob over Esau/the people of God over Pharaoh. c.Rom 9:15:”…I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”-some would call that capricious!
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE-CONT’D d. v. 16 “…So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, BUT GOD WHO HAS MERCY”—NOTHING ELSE! e. v. 17 deals with pharaoh…For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘For this purpose I have raised you throughout the whole earth’. V. 18 So then He has mercy on WHOM HE DESIRES and HARDENS WHOM HE DESIRES.—These phrases of purpose and desire are indicators of design, one cannot say that one is by design and the other is not.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE f. This is further clarified by the illustration of the potter and the clay and equating it to VESSELS OF WRATH PREPARED FOR DESTRUCTION. And the richness of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which HE PREPARED BEFOREHAND FOR GLORY.— REMEMBER, this phrase PREPARED BEFOREHAND is also and indicator or purpose and design—which we will address this part later.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE-CONT’D 2. Those opposed to Calvinism and efficacious grace say that the carnal mind in Rom 8:7 have no interest in spiritual matters and are disobedient, while those who are spiritually minded are the opposite. – a. Fact is that the context speaks of what God has done for the elect –Rom 8:1 [no condemnation]; what He has done in Christ—vv. 2-3. so that the Law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE-CONT’D – b. Rom 8:9 states we are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, “if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.—this is quite clear that this speaks of those spiritually dead and those spiritually alive and not a matter of interest or disinterest.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICATIOUS GRACE-CONT’D 3. Those opposed to efficacious grace and Calvinism say that the Calvinists have it backwards when he says that he believes in Christ because he is saved not the other way around and they cite John 3:16, Mark 16:16, Heb 11:6, and even include baptism. – a. All 3 verses address the subject of faith and the middle one speaks of baptism. – b. Eph 2:8: “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith; and that [faith] is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.—that faith is not of yourselves and that faith is the gift of God.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICATIOUS GRACE- CONT’D c. The baptism mentioned in Mk 16:16 is a spiritual baptism by the Holy Spirit; not the water baptism. 4. Those objecting to Efficacious grace will oppose the idea of this special inner working of the Holy Spirit of grace that brings him to faith in Christ, enabling him to understand and believe spiritual truth. This is due to being given a new heart, a renewed, free will, a love for righteousness, a granted faith and repentance and therefore willingly and freely turns to Christ as Lord and Savior.
OBJECTIONS TO EFFICACIOUS GRACE—CONT’D – a. The cite John 3:3-5—speaks about being born again. – b. Col 3:12-13—being baptized [spiritual baptism]. – c. This adds nothing to the refutation of this truth.
COMPLAINTS AGAINST CALVINISM 1. Man loses his free will and his actions are not the result of his personal choices. R – a. The true nature of man’s will before and after salvation. – b. Eph 2:1-12 speaks of our true condition— no free will prior to regeneration—a fallen will in a sinful world—what was our choices? – c. Rom 6:19-22—we were slaves to sin and now we are slaves to God – d. Col 1:13--God translated us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of His dear son
COMPLAINTS AGAINST CALVINISM—CONT’D 2. Predestination makes God a respecter of persons saving some and damning others: R – a. Answered in Rom 9:9-18 – b. Jacob and Esau i. The inherent design of the covenant of the first born. Ii.That design’s impact of effect on Jacob and Esau. – c. The people of God and pharaoh i. How did pharaoh harden his heart? Ii. How did God harden his heart? Iii. Prov 29:1
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM- CONT’D – d. Rev 13:8 speaks of the time of the plan of redemption—eternity past. – e.2 Cor 5:19 speaks of the parameters in which God operates in redemption. – f. Plan and design of redemption are imbedded in the principles of redemption prior to the those who were and are elect. – g. Therefore purpose and principle precede and supersede personal election…thus God was in Christ and is not a respecter of persons because one has to be in Christ.
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM— CONT’D – h. Rom 1:16 states that the gospel of Christ IS the power of God unto salvation to all who believe…this coupled with the action produced on the believer and unbeliever [Rom 9] shows that in its design that it produces a reaction of availability and unavailability. – i. Those available are drawn by the Father and given this efficacious grace that leads to salvation. Those who are unavailable are left. – j. It is principle superseding anything personal. If God does it any other way, He compromises His integrity, character and essence.
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM— CONT’D 3. It makes man’s efforts in evangelism unnecessary: R – a. Response is Matt 9:37-38: “Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. i. This underlined phrase is not a just a title “Lord” but a participle “that is harvesting”. Ii. The Lord is harvesting; He is simply commands us to be involved in a response of obedience.
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM— CONT’D – b. If this is true, it does not make us less responsible, but more responsible. i. God commands us to do so Ii. It is God’s business who is the elect. Iii. We need not be concerned…we witness to all as if they are the elect! – c. Therefore we can do it with boldness and confidence. i. God is the Guarantor of success. Ii. It is not a proposition to be accepted or rejected.. It is a mandate of mercy. Iii. Remember, The Word of God will not return void.. It will accomplish the purpose to which it is sent Is 55:11. Iv. We are to obey and leave the results up to God.
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM— CONT’D 4. It creates a false view of how we can gain understanding of the Bible and of our faith: R – a. I Jn 2:27 speaks of the anointing of the Holy Spirit abiding in you and you do not need that anyone teach you, but the same anointing teaches you concerning all things [this is verification of something being true] and a faith coming by the Word of God [Rom 10:17] given in messages given to the pastor- teacher by God [Rev 2-3] for the our maturing. [Eph 4:12].
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM- CONT’D – b. Jn 16:13 speaks of the Spirit that guides us into all truth which He hears, speaks, and discloses to us. – c. However in Jn 6:44 it states, “No one can come to Me unless the Father draws him. This is repeated in Jn 6:65- “…no one CAN COME –DUNATAI ELTHEIN— PRES MID IND—can come by one’s own power or resources.
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM- CONT’D i. John 6: 44 “unless the Father who has sent me draws him.” AORIST SUBJ—at a point in time when the Father wills— Zodhiates –drawing by His love…Reinecker/Rogers.. The idea of resistance, to take possession of, to bring near referring to the conversion of proselytes. Lenski states [though Arminian] says that “it is a specific power designed for the purpose of taking hold of the sinners soul and moving it away from darkness, sin and death to Jesus, light and life, it is from the Father else it will never be effected.”
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM- CONT’D ii. In Jn 6:65 “…No one can come to me unless it has been granted him from the Father. Can come is Pres mid Ind. [mentioned]. Has been granted is Perf Pass. Part—no man can of himself can or is able to come at that present point in time unless it has been granted as a completed action before time by the Father. – d. Without these prior conditions being present one is left in a state of unbelief and in I Cor 2:14, spiritual things are foolishness and not understandable because they are “spiritually appraised.”
OBJECTIONS TO CALVINISM- CONT’D – e. What brings this change to enable one to comprehend these spiritually truths that are naturally “unappraisable”? i. 2 Cor 4:4-6: natural minds are blinded by the god of this world, but God says “Light shall shine out of darkness”…has shone in our hearts.” Ii. Jn 1:11-13 “…He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him, But as many as received Him to them He gave the right to become children of God even to those who believe in His name. Who were born, not of blood, not of the will of the flesh not of the will of man, but of God. – This is the basis of the capacity for this understanding that is sovereignly given to us and is not a false basis of our understanding.
CONCLUSIONS 1. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation to every one who believes [Rom 1:16] and in His plan of redemption He has mercy on whom He desires and hardens whom He desires. 2. All of God’s choices and reconciliation are in Christ [2 Cor 5:19] and He never operates outside of that.
CONCLUSIONS-CONT’D 3. The initiation of the gospel makes an impact to which it makes a person either available or unavailable. Those available will be affected by irresistible grace resulting in salvation and sanctification. Those who are unavailable will not. We have to remember that without the initiation of the gospel there would be zero availability and left to ourselves, we were and some still are, on the conveyor belt to hell without this initiation.
CONCLUSIONS-CONT’D 4. God’s election is always base upon principles and design of the gospel with its purpose before it is personal. God never bases His election on anything personal. This makes it possible for God to predestinate and elect without being a Respecter of persons. 5. The intricate design of the gospel is complete and perfect in itself because all things are based upon a concurrent design and purpose that will result in a perfect end motivated by His pure and holy love and grace in which no intelligent creature including the enemies of God will find fault.
