St James’s Church of England School and Sports College Respiration and breathing

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College What you need to know: Know the structure and function of the respiratory system Structure of the respiratory system: epiglottis; trachea; bronchus; bronchioles; alveoli; diaphragm; intercostal muscles Function of the respiratory system: mechanics of breathing (inspiration and expiration); gaseous exchange, (alveoli, diffusion of oxygen into the blood, carbon dioxide out of the blood and into the lungs)

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College How will you be assessed? Tasks: Produce a series of posters for wall display, which outline the structures and functions of the cardio-vascular & respiratory systems. Diagrams and photographs should be included to make this a visual learning aid.

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College A PASS grade:A Merit grade A DISTINCTION grade, describe the structure and function of the respiratory system. explain how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems work together to supply the body with oxygen evaluate how the cardiovascular system and respiratory system work together to supply the body with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College Functions of the respiratory system 1.Transport air into the lungs 2.Facilitates the diffusion of oxygen into the blood stream 3.Helps remove carbon dioxide 4.2 and 3 can be called ‘gas exchange’ Click here!

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College JOURNEY OF AIR THROUGH THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Air passes through the nose or mouth and then through the epiglottis and into the TRACHEA The trachea splits into two tubes called BRONCHI each one is a BRONCHUS) – one going to each lung EPIGLOTTIS TRACHEA BRONCHI

St James’s Church of England School and Sports College JOURNEY (CONT) The bronchi split into smaller tubes called BRONCHIOLES The bronchioles finally end at small bags called ALVEOLI. This is where GASEOUS EXCHANGE takes place BRONCHIOLES ALVEOLI GASEOUS EXCHANGE
