2.8 Cont. Warm-up (IN) 1. Graph Learning Objective: To fit a sinusoidal curve to a set of data

2
NOTES Steps for Fitting Data to a Sine Function: 1: Determine the amplitude - largest data value - smallest data value 2 2: Determine the vertical shift - largest value + smallest value 2 3: Determine the period - 4: Determine the horizontal shift - Use the sub-interval and the period to find phi

3
Use the data on page 202 to find a sine function to fit it. Ex 1 - amplitude - vertical shift - period - (12 months)

4
horizontal shift - We know the period is 12, so we can divide that into 4 sub-intervals sine increases then decreases So there is a max at x=3 But the data says there is a max at x=7 (July) So, we have to move the max 4 units to the right to match up! x becomes (x-4) Finally! The equation is…

5
Use the same data to make the calculator find the best-fit line... Ex 2 -

HW – pg. 207 #19,21,24 Out – what are the steps to fit a curve to a set of data? Summary – I think I can remember… Don’t forget about POW!!
