HELLO MY NAME IS Yahweh

W HO A RE Y OU ? What does the image of the thumbprint with God’s name in the center communicate to you? Why is it important to know the “who” behind any “what”? If God had never revealed His name to us, how would it change our relationship with Him? How does knowing God’s name help you understand God’s actions? Doubtlessliving.co m2 hwh y

T HE N AMES OF G OD This month we will look at the names of God and today we start with His most holy name, the name from which many others are derived: Y AHWEH Y AHWEH hwhy Doubtlessliving.co m3

I A M Y AHWEH Doubtlessliving.co m4 Exodus 6:2-8

W HAT ’ S I N A N AME ? This is the first time in Scripture where God reveals His holy name. Why do you think He used it four times in this short passage? How does a relationship with someone change when we know their name? Why does it make a difference? What do you think it means that God did not reveal His name Yahweh to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? What is the significance of God waiting to reveal His name Yahweh at the proper time? Doubtlessliving.co m5

T HE P ROMISE -K EEPER “Why did God say that by His name the L ORD He had not made Himself known to the patriarchs? Was not God known by the name Yahweh to the patriarchs Abraham... Isaac, and Jacob? Yes, He had been (e.g., Gen. 13:4). But He mainly appeared to them as God Almighty (ʾel šadday), the One who provides or sustains. He had not displayed Himself to the patriarchs primarily by the name Yahweh. So in Exodus 3:14 God meant that now He was revealing Himself to Moses not only as Sustainer and Provider, but also as the Promise-Keeper, the One who was personally related to His people and would redeem them.” The Bible Knowledge Commentary Doubtlessliving.co m6

Y AHWEH P ROMISES Looking back at the promises God made to the Israelites, how did God establish He could be trusted to keep His promises? How is our true character revealed in the promises we make, keep and break? Yahweh is the God who makes and keeps covenant promises. Doubtlessliving.co m7

Exodus 15:1-3 1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD. They said: I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; He has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. 3 The LORD is a warrior; Yahweh is His name. The Israelites are very specific about what they are singing: Yahweh has made good on His covenant. – Are we specific when we sing praises to God? How so? – What do the Israelites recognize about God in this song? Actions? Attributes? Character traits? Y AHWEH K EEPS H IS P ROMISES

L IKE N O O THER GOD Unlike other gods, Yahweh keeps every promise He has ever made. For every promise, trait, and quality, He is worthy to sing to and about, unlike any other god. Doubtlessliving.co m9

Y AHWEH S TANDS A LONE 11 LORD, who is like You among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders? 12 You stretched out Your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. 13 You will lead the people You have redeemed with Your faithful love; You will guide them to Your holy dwelling with Your strength. Doubtlessliving.co m10 Exodus 15:11-13 His exclusiveness and uniqueness are highlighted as they continue to ask the rhetorical question, “Who is like you?” All of us have tried to plan a family vacation and can tell stories of how difficult it is to get a family all pointed in the same direction. Have you ever thought how difficult it must have been to lead two million people?

Y AHWEH O UR G OD When God created us, He knew we (as in the human race) would go after other gods and create them for ourselves if none were to be found. In all of history, no god has been created that can begin to compare with the God who we find in Scripture. He has a unique name that He shared with His people, Yahweh, which communicates His sovereignty and power, forever reminding believers that He is a God who can be trusted to keep His promises. Yahweh is peerless, no matter what religions of the world claim and we can confidently approach Yahweh in song and prayer, just like the Israelites. Doubtlessliving.co m11
