Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. I wait for the Lord. My soul waits, and in his word I put my hope, My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning O Israel, put your hope in the Lord for with him is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? Deep anguish

How do we respond to guilt? 3 If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

True guilt? False guilt? Proposition 1: “It’s my life. I won’t let anyone make me feel guilty for living it my way.” Proposition 2: “I am being told what to do and what not to do in life. I am not sure why I follow these rules, and I feel guilty if I break them.”

Proposition 1

My conscience is clear but that does not make me innocent. I Cor 4:4-5

Proposition 2

Some people feel guilty about their anxieties and regards them as a defeat of faith, but they are afflictions, not sins. Like all afflictions they are if we can so take them, our share in the passion of Christ. C.S. Lewis Separating guilt from anxieties.

I care very little if I am judged by you or by the human court; indeed I do not even judge myself. I Cor 4:3 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God. I Cor 3:23 Genuine guilt feelings will be molded if we grow in Christ.

Genuine guilt feelings that do not lead to confession is worthless. Dr. Lam Hoe Yeoh

My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. I Cor 4:4-5 Responding to genuine guilt 1: Confess and mourn your sin.

If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. Fearful gratitude

Dealing with a guilt trip. When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priest and the elders. Matt 27:3

My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. I Cor 4:4-5 Your response to guilt should be motivated to please God, not to please your own conscience.

Genuine response to forgiveness is not just with joy and gratitude, but also with fear and reverence.

If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared. Hebrew word implies “to be humbled.”

Pride often blinds our conscience. It is actually reported that there is a sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that does not occur even among the pagans: A man has his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this? 1 Cor 5:1-2

Pride begins with being enamored with external projections.

Putting gifted people on pedestals is asking for distress. We all fail at one stage or another. It’s tragic because we give them a prominence they never ask for…we need to pray for the huge number of people who will be devastated by the fall-out too, for the more we place our gifted people on pedestals the greater the damage when they fall. I hope we will take this important message to heart in the future. Philip Hacking, Word Alive A church that places value on external projections encourages secret sins

Responding to genuine guilt 2: Accountability The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out. Proverbs20:5

I wait for the Lord. My soul waits, and in his word I put my hope, My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen waits for the morning Persevering hope

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God- through Jesus Christ our Lord! I Cor 7:24 Responding to genuine guilt 3: It takes time to change

O Israel, put your hope in the Lord for with him is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. Redeeming love

De Profundis

“There in the garden of tears, my heavy load he chose to bear”. Graham Kendrick. Responding to genuine guilt 4: Burdens are lifted at Calvary.

Prayer de profundis gives to God gloria in excelsis. Charles Spurgeon.
