TOLEDO: CASTILLO OF SAN SERVANDO & MOSQUE OF CRISTO DE LA LUZ My mother became obsessed with Castles because in the US they are practically nonexistent. My stepdad became obsessed with chorizo and jamón. (He even bought bite-sized pieces of Chorizo to eat while we were site-seeing.
TOLEDO: MONASTERIO DE SAN JUAN AND PUENTE DE SAN MARTÍN My favorite part of Toledo was the Puente de San Martín because we really don’t have anything like it. (Especially in Wisconsin).
MÁLAGA Our favorite things about Málaga were the tapas, THE BEACH, and seeing our very first Procession! (But mostly the beach). My parents were amazed by how late the people eat here because in the US we eat dinner at around 7pm!
GIBRALTAR We spent 1 night in Gibraltar and took the cable car up to the top of the Rock. It was very cool, but mostly because of the monkeys! We found it interesting that we had to speak Spanish one minute and then we arrived in Gribraltar and could speak English again. It definitely made my parents more comfortable!
TARIFA While we were in Tarifa we saw another Procession and took the ferry to Morocco! My favorite part was seeing the Procession, but my Mom’s favorite was the Castle.
TARIFA: PROCESSION At this point we had only seen 2 Processions and my parents were already sick of them.
SEVILLA We were able to see both the Alcazar and the Cathedral in Sevilla. It’s amazing how much the architecture can change just by going from the North to the South of Spain. They started ringing the bells while we were going to the Cathedral and it was really cool to see. In the churches in WI, they barely ring the bells anymore!
SEVILLA: SO MANY PROCESSIONS…BUT ALSO FLAMENCO! My Mom and I decided that our favorite part of the trip was seeing the Flamenco Show. We have both seen it on TV, but it is spectacular to see in person. We definitely want to see another show sometime in our lives!
SALAMANCA: CATHEDRAL, PLAZA MAYOR, & THE UNIVERSITY As many of you know. I studied in Salamanca 3 years ago and I’m definitely partial to the city. They say that you will have good luck on your exams if you find the frog at the University. My parents looked for it for at least 10 minutes. (In the end I had to show them where it was).
SALAMANCA: CLIMBING THE CATHEDRAL & THE PUENTE ROMANO Climbing to the top of the Cathedral was one of my favorite things that we did in Salamanca. It allowed us to see a great view of the entire city!
LEÓN: CATHEDRAL & PLAZA MAYOR The León Cathedral was definitely my Mom’s favorite of all the Cathedrals that we saw. She fell in love with the stained glass windows.
BARRIO HUMEDO & INSIDE THE LEÓN CATHEDRAL I think what strikes us most about Spain and Europe in general is the fact that everything is so much older than what we are used to. It is important to remember that the US is a very young country and therefore, seeing a cathedral that was built before our country even existed is breathtaking.
