© Brad Stewart 2005 Session Two - Disciple Being a follower of Christ

All Discipleship begins with the Gospel

God’s Plan Man was created to have a relationship with God and other men (Genesis 1:27) God wants all men to be His friend and know His love (Psalms 100:5)

Man’s Problem Rm 3:23 All Sin 1 Tim 2:3-4 God wants all men to be saved Holy God Sinful Man

God’s Remedy Rm 3:23 All Sin Holy God God shows His love Rm 5:8 Christ died for sins 1 Ptr 3:18 Sinful Man 1 Tim 2:3-4 God wants all men to be saved

Man’s Response Rm 3:23 All Sin Holy God Rm 5:81 Ptr 3:18 Confess and believe Rm 10:9 Acts 10:43 Forgiveness Which side are you on? Sinful Man 1 Tim 2:3-4 God wants all men to be saved Acts 10:38 Healing

The Gospel 1 Corinthians 15: 3, 4 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.

Those Who Don’t Follow Have a wrong perspective of who He is (Luke 9:57-62) Do not properly calculate the cost (Luke 14:25-35) Think “I know what is in my best interest” (Matthew 16:24-28) Reject Him as their Lord and Savior (John 1:10-11)

Wrong Perspective Luke 9:57-62 First Man – unable to deny himself Second Man – loves others more than Christ Third Man – is double minded and unable to focus on the task at hand

Calculate the Cost Luke 14:15-35 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. –The cost of expense –The cost of effort

I Know What’s Best Matthew 16:24-28 I Know What’s Best Matthew 16:24-28 Denies himself for the sake of others vs seeking his own sake at others expense Puts Kingdome work first vs does whatever it takes to get ahead Consider worldly items as rubbish vs tries to grow in power, position, and possessions

Reject Him As Lord He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Those Who Do Follow Desire to do God’s will (Matthew 12:49-50) Obey God’s word (John 14:21) Work at loving God’s people (John 13:34-35) Get involved in God’s work (Matthew 28:18- 20)

Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 72 Study God’s Word Obedience is the hallmark of a Christian disciple? (John 14:21) Has God already addressed this or a similar situation? What does Scripture teach as an example to live, command to obey or lifestyle to forsake? Word

Speak to God in Prayer Ask, seek, and knock –Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened (Matthew 7:2,8) Check your motives –When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures (James 4:3). Pray

The First Man/Woman Team Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man and he brought her to the man.

The Teams First Assignment The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.
