Chapter 16 Myth: Taxing Carbon Dioxide Will Work Mitch Williams

Forget It  “The countries of the world will never agree on a global scheme to tax carbon dioxide”  Restrain on developing countries  China  India  Indonesia

Limitations on Neurotoxins  U.S. emissions from coal-fired power plants total some 48 tons of mercury and 88 tons of lead per year.  25% of U.S. emissions from coal-burning power plants are deposited within the contiguous U.S.  30% of the mercury that settles onto the ground in the United States comes from other countries.  China is the most problematic – 600 tons per year

USGS - 2009  Seven year long study that analyzed hundreds of fish, from 34 species, caught in 291 streams across the U.S.  100% contained mercury  25% “exceeded the criterion for the protection of humans who consume average amounts of fish.

 In mid 2009, a study by Dan Laks at UCLA found that 1/3 of all U.S. women now have inorganic mercury in their blood.  “Results suggest that chronic mercury exposure has reached a critical level where inorganic mercury deposition within the human body is accumulating with time.”  “…risks of associated neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases will rise as well.”

Questions  Which country contributes the largest amounts of neurotoxins into the air?  How many U.S. women have inorganic mercury in their blood?
