Mit dem Bau des Assuandamms drohten die Tempel im Stausee zu versinken. Sie wurden in Blöcke zersägt und 64 Meter höher und 180 Meter landeinwärts wieder aufgebaut. Seit 1979 steht Abu Simbel auf der UNESCO-Liste für Weltkulturerbe
