Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Seismic Calibration Using Mining Explosion in the Middle East Project Objectives: Determine the accurate seismic wave travel times and location accuracy in Jordan, Israel and surrounding countries. P wave travel time models and station correction

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Seismic Calibration Using Mining Explosion in the Middle East PARTICIPANTS: NRA – Jordan GII – Israel LLNL American Embassy, Tel Aviv, Project Officer

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Seismic Calibration Using Mining Explosion in the Middle East Grant Budget: NRA – Jordan $ 215000 GII – Israel$ 215000 LLNL$ 70000 Total$ 500000

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Seismic Calibration Using Mining Explosion in the Middle East Work Plan: Conducting the calibration explosion two in Jordan and two in Israel. Recording the seismic waves from the explosions. Exchange the data for joint analysis of the data.

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Controlled Explosions in Jordan First Announcement: The Natural Resources Authority (NRA) is planning to conduct two large-scale explosions of 20 and 40 tons magnitude: The first explosion of 40 tons of ANFO will be initiated in borehole of depth of 20 m on DEC. 4, 2004 at 13:00 GMT The second one of 20 tons of ANFO will be initiated in boreholes of depth of 25 m on DEC 13, 2004 at 13 GMT

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Controlled Explosions in Jordan Geology Setting at Ruwayshid: The Area of the explosion is mostly covered by sedimentary rocks spanning from Eocene to Quaternary age. Umm Rijam Chert Limestone Formation (Eocene) is the principle rock unit in the area. Superficial (Pleistocene) cover considerable parts of the area.

Gulf Forum 20-24 FEB 2005, UAE Conclusion The first explosion was not strong enough to be recorded clearly by all the stations in JSO network. The second explosion was strong enough to be recorded clearly by the JSO network and adjacent network. The calculated locations from the recorded stations was not good for the first one, while it was excellent for the second one. Time correction for some stations were derived and will be used in the earthquakes location. New model velocity-depth will be derived by using all the result of the project. Controlled explosion should be done in many sites among the stations not outside of the network.
