Opener – In your composition notebook, write the question and answer. 1.What are three characteristics all rocks have? 2.What is the difference between an intrusive and an extrusive igneous rock? 3.How are igneous rocks formed?

Opener Answers 1.What are the three characteristics all rocks have? they are solid, they are formed in nature, rocks usually contain one or more minerals

Opener – In your composition notebook, write the question and answer. 1.What are three characteristics all rocks have? 2.What is the difference between an intrusive and an extrusive igneous rock? 3.How are igneous rocks formed?

Opener Answers 2. What is the difference between an intrusive and an extrusive igneous rock? An intrusive igneous rock is formed beneath Earth’s surface from magma, an extrusive igneous rock is formed above Earth’s surface from lava

Opener – In your composition notebook, write the question and answer. 1.What are three characteristics all rocks have? 2.What is the difference between an intrusive and an extrusive igneous rock? 3.How are igneous rocks formed?

Opener Answers 3. How are igneous rocks formed? Igneous rocks are formed when molten rock cools and becomes a solid

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary Rock: Definition Rocks formed when pieces of older rock, plants, and other loose materials (sediments) are pressed or cemented together How does this differ from an igneous rock?

Sediments Sediment is material that settles out of water or air Examples: loose rock, plant parts, bones, etc. How do you think sediments form?

How Sedimentary Rocks Form Sedimentary rocks develop from layers of sediment that layer and cement over time Some rocks are formed from pressure alone while others are held together by minerals that crystallize between them Pressure

Two Types of Sedimentary Rocks Organic Sedimentary Rock contain remains of things once alive (plants, animals, etc) Ex: Coal forms from plant material Clastic Sedimentary Rock contain sediments that were NOT once alive (rock, sand, mud, etc) Ex: Sandstone is made from sand

Sedimentary Sort With your partner, read the description of each rock. Determine first if it is sedimentary or igneous. If it is igneous, put it in an igneous categorty. Then, based on what the rock is made of, determine if it is a clastic sedimentaryrock or an organic sedimentary rock. Record your answers in your composition notebook with support. Igneous Clastic Sedimentary Organic Sedimentary Sandstone: it is made of Coal: it is made of plant sand pressed together material pressed over time together over time
