Before viewing the slide presentations on evolution, the teacher should first present the introduction to the evolution section from the apologetics course “An Unshakeable Faith.”

Icons of Evolution Fables in Textbooks and Museums

Icons of Evolution are evidences that are commonly offered for evolution in textbooks and natural history museums.

They should actually be called MYTHS OF EVOLUTION, because they provide zero scientific evidence for Darwinian evolution. In fact, they refute evolution!

“Evolution does not warrant being called a theory or a hypothesis.” This is why we evolution cannot rightly be called a “theory.” David Stone, Ph.D. physics

“A theory arises when a hypothesis has stood up to repeated tests under a wide variety of conditions and cannot be broken. Evolution warrants neither term. Evolution qualifies as a philosophical, even a religious idea, void of scientific support, and intended to replace biblical truth with stories.” David Stone, Ph.D. physics

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto FABLES” 2 Timothy 4:3-4

Billions of Years

The idea that the universe is billions of years old is probably the major evolutionary icon that is used to contradict the Bible.

Before Darwin published “On the Origin of Species” in 1859, doubt in the Bible was being spread by Charles Lyell’s “uniformitarian geology” and its claim that the earth is millions of years old.

“The revolution from young earth to old earth was the snowball starting the whole avalanche that eventually changed mankind’s entire worldview” (Ian Taylor).

Lyell was as much a Bible hater as he was a geologist. His objective was to destroy the authority of the Genesis record.

Lyell hoped to use his theory to drive men “out of the Mosaic record” (Life, Letters, and Journals).

“It was the imperative need for great antiquity that deposed catastrophism, rather than any new scientific discoveries; it was a new way of looking at things, not a new piece of knowledge” (Richard Milton, Shattering the Myths of Darwinism).

Radiometric dating was invented in the early 20th century and was alleged to provide “absolute” results.

“It is based on the fact that radioactive isotopes decay to form isotopes of different elements. The starting isotope is called the parent and the ending is called the daughter. The time it takes for one half of the parent atoms to decay to the daughter atoms is called the half-life” (Roger Patterson).

“If certain things are known, it is possible to calculate the amount of time since the parent isotope began to decay” (Roger Patterson).

1. Every evolutionary dating method is built upon evolutionary assumptions.

* That the initial conditions of the sample are known accurately Assumptions as listed by Don DeYoung, Ph.D. in physics

* That we can tell infallibly whether or not the rock has exchanged atoms with the surroundings during its history

* That the nuclear decay rate or half-life of the parent isotope has remained constant since the rock was formed

The following example shows how that the radiometric dating system relies on two basic and unprovable assumptions: The Burning Candle example from “The World that Perished” by John Whitcomb

(1) THE ASSUMPTION OF STARTING POINT OR ORIGINAL CONDITION (2) THE ASSUMPTION OF A UNIFORM RATE OF CHANGE FROM THAT STARTING POINT TO THE PRESENT (1) THE ASSUMPTION OF STARTING POINT OR ORIGINAL CONDITION (2) THE ASSUMPTION OF A UNIFORM RATE OF CHANGE FROM THAT STARTING POINT TO THE PRESENT

Consider a burning candle in an abandoned house. It is now burning at the rate of one inch an hour. Question: How long has it been burning and, thus, how long ago was the house abandoned? Consider a burning candle in an abandoned house. It is now burning at the rate of one inch an hour. Question: How long has it been burning and, thus, how long ago was the house abandoned?

Answer: No one can know until it can be shown how high the candle was when it was last lit and how fast it was burning originally.

Question: How old is the earth? Answer: No one can know unless it can be shown what it was like when it began and how rapidly it has changed since then. Question: How old is the earth? Answer: No one can know unless it can be shown what it was like when it began and how rapidly it has changed since then.

The following example shows how that the radiometric dating relies on basic and unprovable assumptions. The Hourglass Example from “The New Answers Book”

If we walk into a room and observe an hourglass with sand flowing from top to bottom, we could calculate how long ago the hourglass was turned over.

We would need to estimate how fast the sand is falling and then measure the amount of sand at the bottom.

We could still be wrong, though, because this formula is based on certain assumptions that might be incorrect.

It assumes * there was no sand at the bottom when the hourglass was first turned over. * No sand has been added or taken out * the sand has been falling at the same rate It assumes * there was no sand at the bottom when the hourglass was first turned over. * No sand has been added or taken out * the sand has been falling at the same rate

Likewise, the evolutionist assumes that he knows the conditions that existed at the formation of rocks he is testing. He assumes a uniformitarian process since then, and other things – things he cannot know but that are necessary for accurate dating results.

This project was conducted by a team of eight Ph.D. scientists between 1997 and The RATE project (Radioisotopies and the Age of The Earth)

The project is summarized in the book “Thousands Not Billions.” The RATE project (Radioisotopies and the Age of The Earth)

“The results of the carbon- 14 dating demonstrated serious problems for long geologic ages.”

“Samples were taken from ten different coal layers, that, according to evolutionists, represent different time periods in the geologic column.”

“The coal samples, which date to hundreds of millions of years based on standard evolution time estimates, all contained measurable amounts of C14. Since the half-life of C14 is 5,730 years, there should be no detectable C14 left after about 100,000 years.”

2. Evolutionary dating methods give widely different results.

This is known as THE ANOMALY FACTOR. Scientists have tried to eliminate it, but they have been unsuccessful.

Rock paintings in the South African bush in 1991 were dated by Oxford University’s radiocarbon accelerator at 1,200 years old, but they had actually been painted by an art class only a few years earlier.

Volcanic rocks in Hawaii were dated at 160 million to 3 billion years old, when they were actually formed from an eruption in 1801.

Rocks at the Mount Ngauruhoe volcano in New Zealand were dated at 270,000 to 3.5 million years, but they were actually formed between 1949 and 1976.

Louis Leakey’s Zinjanthropus skull was dated at 1.75 million years by the potassium-argon method and at 10,000 years by the carbon 14 method.

A layer of volcanic ash at Lake Turkana, Kenya, was dated by three different teams, with results varying from 500,000 to 17.5 million years.

Dr. Steve Austin, a member of the RATE project, had samples tested from the alleged oldest and youngest strata of the Grand Canyon.

He used the isochron dating method, which is supposed to be infallible.

The oldest rocks were dated at 1.07 billion years while the youngest were dated at 1.34 billion. Thus, the infallible isochron dating method says that the youngest strata is 270 million years OLDER than the oldest strata.

In another RATE study, rocks from the Beartooth Mountains in Wyoming ranged from 1.5 to 2.6 billion years.

Dating methods that are this wildly variable and contradictory surely lack any element of real scientific authority.

3. Evolutionists are highly selective in choosing dates.

Typically they select dates they prefer while ignoring those they find unacceptable. dating methods for a young earth are ignored.

“Science has proposed many methods of geochronometry... but of these, only one --that of the radioactive decay of uranium and similar elements--yields an age for the earth of billions of years. This is the one method that has been enthusiastically promoted, while all other methods have been neglected.”

“There are powerful professional pressures on scientists to conform to a consensus.... the published dating figures always conform to preconceived dates and never contradict those dates.”

“In general, dates in the ‘correct ball park’ are assumed to be correct and are published, but those in disagreement with other data are seldom published nor are discrepancies fully explained” (Dr. Richard Mauger, Contributions to Geology, 1977).

“If a C14 date supports our theories, we put it in the main text. If it does not entirely contradict them, we put it in a foot-note. And if it is completely ‘out of date,’ we just drop it” (I. U. Olsson, cited from Andrew Snelling, Earth’s Catastrophic Past).

“If all the rejected dates were retrieved from the waste basket and added to the published dates, the combined results would show that the dates produced are the scatter that one would expect BY CHANCE ALONE.”

Ian taylor, engineer “None of this is mentioned in popular magazines and textbooks, and the impression is left in the reader’s mind that ‘absolute’ chronology has been established by the radiocarbon method.” Ian taylor, engineer “None of this is mentioned in popular magazines and textbooks, and the impression is left in the reader’s mind that ‘absolute’ chronology has been established by the radiocarbon method.”

4. Most dating methods point to a young earth.

Walt Brown, Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from MIT, lists 22 dating methods that point to a young earth.

Andrew Snelling, Ph.D. in geology, lists several dating methods that point to a young earth.

There is also a good discussion on dating methods in Ian Taylor’s “In the Minds of Men.”

The following questions are by Mark Cadwallader, a chemical engineer: Why do the oldest trees happen to be just a few thousand years old? Why is there so little helium in the atmosphere if such a quickly diffusing gas is escaping from rocks at high rates? Why are there radioactive halos preserved in granite rocks from elements with half-lives of only several minutes? Why do polystrate fossils pierce through so many different layers of supposed “geologic time” The following questions are by Mark Cadwallader, a chemical engineer: Why do the oldest trees happen to be just a few thousand years old? 64 Why are Carbon-14 dating measurements continually finding mere thousands of years for fossilized trees? Why is C-14 being found in some diamonds and coal in which all the radioactive carbon should be long gone because they are supposed to be millions of years old? Why are many gas and oil reservoirs under such high pressures, so that they become “gushers” and flow of their own accord, when rock porosity, permeability, and cracks are all around to relieve pressure over the supposed millions of years? 65 Why is the earth’s magnetic field decaying so rapidly, extrapolating backwards to levels that would be destabilizing within approximately 10,000 years? Why do we see so many comets in our solar system, since the comet tails are evidence of their volatile material boiling away as they pass by the sun? They should all have been consumed by now if the solar system is billions of years old. Why haven’t the continents eroded nearly flat? Why haven’t the oceans accumulated sediment thousands of feet deep if the earth is really billions of years old? 66 “The observations cited in the questions above are all affirmative evidence for a young earth. Evolutionists will always come up with stories to try to explain away the simple, direct implication of these observations. It’s up to you to discern between stories and evidence.” David Stone, Ph.D. physics

5. Biomaterials in “ancient” fossils.

What explains the existence of biomaterials and soft tissue in fossils that are allegedly millions of years old?

“Researchers have uncovered biological molecules like proteins, DNA, and pigments from fossils that are supposedly millions of years old. Laboratory studies indicate that they will only survive thousands, not millions, of years” (Brian Thomas, Acts & Facts, 2009).

A mosasaur fossil at the Dinosaur Institute in Los Angeles, supposedly millions of years old, has retina pigment, dried blood residue, and preservation of skin structures from all parts of the body” (Acts & Facts, 2010).

In 2005, Mary Schweitzer and colleagues published a paper in Science magazine describing the presence of soft tissue in the fossilized femur of a T. rex unearthed in Montana (Impact, June 2006).

In 2009, researchers reconstituted dried ink from a “150 million-year-old” fossil squid’s ink sac and used it to draw a picture of the squid (Archaeology Daily News, Aug. 18, 2009).

In July 2008, BBC News reported on fossil feathers that have retained their pigment colors. Professor Mike Benton asks, “How do you square that with the well-known fact that the majority of organic molecules decay in thousands of years?”

NOTE TO TEACHERS There are review questions and summaries to this material in the book An Unshakeable Faith.

This presentation is abbreviated from the book “Seeing the Non-Existent: Evolution’s Myths and Hoaxes.” This book has about many more icons of evolution.
