Context Clues?? The dog was attentive when he saw a squirrel climb up a tree. I paid a lot of attention in class, so the teacher said that I was attentive. She is always attentive. I can’t stand it!

Restatement clues Definition: Words or phrases that define or restate a word’s meaning in familiar terms. Example: The dried rose was as fragile as a butterfly’s wing. In other words, its delicate petals could be damaged easily. Where are the signal words? Where is the context clue? What does fragile mean?
Example clues Definition: When an example of the unfamiliar word is given. The example may be a certain type of thing, action, or characteristic. Example: When our neighbors travel, they always look for comfortable accommodations, such as a beach cottage, hotel suite, or mountain cabin. What are the signal words? Where are the context clues? What does accommodations mean?
Contrast/antonym clues Definition: Words or phrases that are the opposite of the unfamiliar word’s meaning. Example: Unlike Jason’s room, which was immaculate, Jeffrey’s room was extremely messy. What is the signal word? What is the context clue? What does immaculate mean?
Keyword clues Definition: Words or phrases that modify(describe) or are related to the unfamiliar word. Example: The two characters in my story believe it is their destiny to be enemies. Their elders have taught them that this is meant to be. What are the words related to the meaning of destiny? What does destiny mean?
Definition/explanation clues Definition: When a sentence contains the definition or an explanation of the unfamiliar word. Example: Alan will help the woman once she escapes and becomes a fugitive from her troubled country. Where is the context clue? What does fugitive mean?
