20 Main Idea: The expedition needed the Eskimos to help them survive in Greenland. While Matt finished the small wooden house, the other men went to find Eskimos to join their group. (The men would have to use sign language because none of them spoke Eskimo.) Peary (1) needed Eskimo men to help hunt polar bears and seals and walruses and reindeer and caribou and foxes for furs and meat. He (2) needed Eskimo women to chew the furs and sew them into pants and coats. The thickest wool coat from home would be useless in the Arctic; (3) they had to have clothing made of the same fur that kept the arctic animals warm. In exchange for their work. Peary would give the Eskimos pots and pans, needles, tools, and other useful items.
