Establish innovation alongside research as integral element of Ph.D. Combine resources to develop joint Structured Ph.D. Programmes Provide Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Select Industry mentored interdisciplinary projects Joint UCD-TCD Certificate & Diploma in Innovation & Entrepreneurship -learn how ideas from primary research can be exploited -explore research response to identified market needs & opportunities -guidance on innovation and business development processes -selected modules made available to undergraduates 11 Innovation Academy

12 © © John Mc Manus 2009 NovaUCD Skills Training Module Innovation and Knowledge Transfer: 15hrs/6 days + Assignment Introduction to innovation The role of the researcher in the innovative process IP policy at UCD and national guidelines for management of IP The different forms of IP Patents and the patent system Managing the capture, reporting and protection of IP Evaluating and valuing IP Developing a business plan (for Spin-out or Licensing) Negotiating and licensing IP Assignments for Credits -complete an invention disclosure -conduct a patent database search -assess commercial opportunity & estimate finances required 12

13 © © John Mc Manus 2009 IP Training – Barriers And Resources Reluctance at staff level to engage Reluctance at Ph.D. level (students not showing commercial interest) Mentally segregating research from IP/commercial instead of integrating Change perceptions of fundamental research as an independent activity Embrace innovation as a rationale for engaging in research Increase awareness of the relevance of IP to innovation Resources -finance to develop course material and integrate into curricula -creating initiative & support to begin the process is a greater issue -engaging specialised staff to deliver courses - recruiting external presenters to deliver interesting case studies -many specialised courses available now through EPA and others 13

14 © © John Mc Manus 2009 Key to IP training is selection of relevant and interesting material Include case studies from own environment that everyone can relate to Show the relevance of IP in every-day commercial activities Show how companies rely on IPR to create and defend their business opportunities and ultimately deliver -economic benefit -profit and jobs Other Third Level Training Using sections of Graduate Skills Training Module to deliver ½ -day and 1-day training courses/workshops to lecturing staff and researchers in other universities, technical institutes and research centres in Ireland 14 IP Training – Barriers And Resources

23 Dissemination of IP Knowledge in European Universities IP Training on its own is not sufficient to explain the relevance and generate the interest It must be linked to commercialisation of technologies Innovation is the Trojan Horse -it allows you to introduce the importance of IP and to reveal the tools that support and underpin the innovation infrastructure 23
