Active Source Data at the IRIS DMC: Current Practice Tonight there will be a REQUEST demo session after dinner. Tickets still available…… What “Assembled Data” does IRIS have? Discovery How to request the data, 2 most common methods User Base Q&A Tonight

What is available @ DMC 406 Unique Data Sets CSS, AH, SAC, PH5, SEG-Y, SEG2, and other (i.e. Apollo Lunar, VAX, UPD, TRD). The variety of data formats is why we call these “Assembled” and not just “Active Source”, though SEGY is bulk Date Range: 1960 (Chile EQ) to 2013 Primary Contributors: PASSCAL – 200 Including USArray Flex-Array USGS - 22 OBSIP – 16 (+ JSP, NASA, SEIS-UK, LDEO, DOE, OTHER)

View of DMC Database

Submission Rate (Turbulence is low) Report No (e.g. 10-001) signifies when data were submitted, not recorded. So these data were submitted to the DMC in 2010. Earliest Report No is 05-001, so submitted in 2005. 2013: Received 14 - Data was recorded between 2002 (Japan Subduction) - 2013 2012: Received 15 - Data was recorded between 1992 (In-Depth) – 2012 2011: Received 23 - Data was recorded between 1991 (Gysers) - 2011 2010: Received 24 - Data was recorded between 2003 (San Bernadino) and 2010 Observation is that data is submitted about 3 years after collected, but highly variable. History of no data management policy that mandated archival. (?)

How to Find Report No. Lists and descriptions of assembled data sets are here: http://www.iris.edu/SeismiQuery/assembled.phtml

SeismiQuery Interface Page

When you click “View Results”

Use the MDA utility http://www.iris.edu/mda

MDA, Cont’d Includes links to reports, whether its Restricted, etc

2 Types of Request Protocols  We will have demos later today, but now you have a start at finding what is available. Use the Web form: http://www.iris.edu/data/assembled_request.phtmlhttp://www.iris.edu/data/assembled_request.phtml This creates a request file that is sent to assembled_request@iris.washington.edu

This is the Web Form

2 nd Method Discover the Report No. from the database Create a “breq_fast” format request with an added token line loaded with the Report No. and emailed to assembled_request@iris.washington.edu assembled_request@iris.washington.edu

How the data are curated/stored Data are contributed files on disk storage. We are given these in packages, we don’t transform them, & no easy way to subset unless by filename indexing you may retrieve from the accompanying report, in cases. For example, this is the PASI 2013 SEGY experiment holdings, so someone could ask for UASD-SOCCER file only, but manual and limited:

User Base, or lack thereof Since documenting user requests in the DMC database in 2006, there have only been 474 requests for “assembled” data

The End But hopefully, a new beginning………?
