1 Concentrated Solar Systems Sponsored by Division of Energy Kourosh Sedghi-sigarchi Assistant Professor Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Leonard C. Nelson College of Engineering WVUTech Montgomery, WV

2 Concentrated Solar Power Concentrating solar power technologies convert solar energy into electricity by using reflective surfaces such as mirrors to focus concentrated sunlight onto a receiver. The technologies concentrate sunlight from 80 to 3,000 times normal, producing high temperatures at the receiver. The receiver then transfers the heat to a device that converts the heat into electricity

3 Solar Panel Energy Former University of NSW researcher David Mills, now working in Silicon Valley will release a paper shortly showing that 90 percent of the entire United States Energy needs can be delivered by concentrating solar thermal power. ( http://beyondzeroemissions.org) http://beyondzeroemissions.org Facts: Highly visible green building element Can be sited anywhere there is sun Rooftops Once purchased the power is free

4 Solar Power 2006 Conference 1,500 attendees 2005 - 7,000 in 2006 Silicon valley is shifting focus from silica chip to the silica solar cell From movement to market” “Cultural momentum is behind solar… there is no stopping it” “Solar is in the 1990’s of the dot.com era” Aerial view of the five 30MW parabolic trough plants at Kramer Junction in the Mojave desert of California Ref: http://www.flagsol.com/SEGS_tech.htm
