Often these supply chains will include existing relationships with lengthy trading histories. These trading histories and existing relationships do not, however, guarantee that these companies are dealing with each other in a cost effective manner or that the business relationship has strategic value. For companies that have not become “e” enabled with an electronic commerce solution, the most popular methods of communication with supply chain partners are via phone, fax, or . On the sales side of a company, product catalogues are often printed in hard copy and distributed to existing customers. This process is extremely costly and prohibits companies from updating catalogues in a timely manner in line with market expectations. The ability to fax or catalogues has reduced some of the printing costs but has not addressed the processing costs of sending or receiving multiple updated catalogues and updating them as appropriate. In some medium sized organisations, the task of maintaining updated catalogues can cost more than one full time employee. Each of these communications methods has existed for many years in one form or another. Unfortunately, these communications methods actually cost companies money, often much more money then they realise. These methods are personnel dependant, time of day dependant, prone to miscommunication, require double handling of information and are extremely inefficient. On average, these inefficiencies can add up to 20% to the cost of each transaction as compared to strategically sourced e-procurement. In some companies, existing trading relationships required changing and only those partners interested in investing time and money into an EDI solution were considered as viable partners. An organisation with multiple suppliers recently invested almost $30K and countless man hours over 9 months in the implementation of an EDI link with one of its newest suppliers. Given the nature of the market, it is expected that a new supplier may be chosen within just over 1 years time, when the supply is required to go to tender once again. Point to point EDI links do not provide value for money. Historically, if companies wanted to communicate more efficiently, they would need to use some sort of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) with each trading partner. These links act as translators between companies. Unfortunately these links were costly to implement, required very skilled IT staff to install and manage, and were inflexible as each new trading partner required an individual EDI link. In many cases, these EDI links facilitated only basic communication, or focused only on critical transactions, thus functions like updating a suppliers catalogue or price negotiations were still handled manually.

This model changed business relationships further by putting a “middleman” company between each trading company. The cost to develop an EDI links between each enterprise and the marketplace service provider still existed, but fewer were needed overall. The marketplace service provider would charge a subscription fee to become a member and then charge a transaction fee for each transaction to or from a company. These fees continued to add to the cost of each sale. Because the flow of data was controlled by the marketplace service provider, companies lost control of the presentation and maintenance of their catalogue and company data. This resulted in time lags in the updating of information, costing companies competitiveness and strategic position. An Australasian e-marketplace, developed at a cost of almost US$17M, was recently sold to one of the participants for just US$2.2M. Lack of projected transaction volumes and of supplier participation were some of the key contributors to this e- marketplace’s abysmal performance. Gartner Research revealed that implementation costs often outpaced software and subscription costs by a factor of 3-10 times. By offering little value vs. cost to suppliers, many e-marketplaces soon found themselves with an unattractive imbalance of supply and demand. Many suppliers were not willing to invest resources into a solution for a limited number of customers bent on driving their prices down.
